A must see to experience what a hobby brings one. We were very impressed about the massivemnumbers of shells and other stuff . What quality, colours and the joy of the collector who is gladly sharing all about his findings.

A gift of a museum

We visited Schiermonnikoog in March, in a particularly cold period. We took a snowy walk to the shell museum and were amazed by what we heard and found!
The owner greeted us at the door and gave us a informative introduction to his and his wife’s collection of shells. The museum is full of beauty! What amazed us, is that what they have collected over many years, is only a fraction of what’s actually out there!
Well worth a visit and we hope to visit the island again in the summer and start shell collecting!

Really interesting

Imagine a teacher of biology with a fascination for shells..... next to his house there is an annex with many displays: Shells that his family has found over the past decades. He travels all over the world to look for them! Go and see for yourselves and you will walk the beaches with different eyes!

tip: buy one, or more, of his booklets on local birds, butterflies and plants. They are "dummy" proof! ;)

When I go to Schiermonnikoog, I never go back without a visit in the Schelpen Museum by Thijs de Boer. It's really impressive, what this guy has collected and found.
Really recommendable.

In a private house you find a huge collection of shells all collected by the owner himself.
He knows a lot about shells and likes to explain also to children.
You pay a small amount and can come back any time, which is very nice.

The greatest place to look at shells in the world.
Jul 2013
This review was written by our 8-year old son. The museum was one of the best days of my life. I liked the giant crab and mini crabs, also the giant spiral shell and all the multi-colored shells, but my favorite thing was the man who owns the museum. He was so nice to explain everything in English, including the shell of the oldest and longest living creature in the world (life span of 400 years). He also taught me about birds and showed us a special nest. Then he told us where to go on the beach to find shells, and we stayed at the beach until dark and found many rare shells!
