This is an excellent Museum that shows the period of time in Spain between 1936 and 1980. My wife came to sunny Spain in the 60s and, during that time, knew absolutely nothing about the fascist government she was living with. Only years later in the 21st century did she realize what was happening in that period of time that she was totally blind to it.
The town very small is right on the border between Spain and France but if you're at all interested in Spanish history it's an excellent place to visit about an hour from Girona.

Great place to get a feel for all the displaced people who came over the Pyrenees to escape Franco. Well documented and presented. A much better place to spend a few hours than the supermarkets selling cheap booze!

This museum which mainly refers to the 'exils' leaving Spain after the defeat by the Franco fascists in 1938 is a hidden treasure showing what the world normally simply doesn't want to see similar to a concentration camp but in this case it also shows whilst Catalonia still wants to obtain it's real independence from Spain, visiting this museum serves the reason on a golden platter

Since our first visit we have taken six sets of visitors here as we consider it the best few hours education for the region. It is well constructed, informative and engaging (particularly if you enjoy local history). The audio guide is a must as it helps focus your reading of exhibits. Probably not a museum for anyone under 12 as it is not interactive. However visiting or living in this area, I consider it an invaluable resource!

We have lived in North Catalunya (France) since 2000 and are aware of the history of the area and the Retirada as well as the camps on the French side of the border. We at last visited this extremely informative and interesting museum.
We also took advantage of the audio guide and our tour took the whole two hours without much lingering! The €4 entrance fee, which includes the audio guide, is extremely good value.

We actually visited the museum a couple of years back, but didn't get round to writing a review (couldn't write the review without clicking on one of their dates!) This is an excellent little museum, with lots of information about the Retirada and the Civil War, as well a pictures and quotes from exiles. It really brings it home to you that these people were never able to return to their homeland whilst Franco was alive and many died in exile far from home. I hadn't realised how far flung the exiles were, some even going as far as Chile. A very moving experience and well worth a visit. Like many Spanish/Catalan museums and monuments, they give a reductions for students, the retired etc.

We made time to seek out this gem of a museum whilst in La Jonquera. We spent an amazing and informative 2 hours in there with our English audio guides. So much to learn. Very emotional. Lots of artefacts, photos and personal accounts of the Spanish Civil war, exile, WW2 and more. The little Spanish restaurant almost next door, Cafe D'Avall is a taste of real Spain. It doesn't look much from outside but go in and you will find a pleasant place to sit and discuss what you have just heard and seen in the museum. Well worth a visit.
