This is a fantastic museum - you can really feel the presence of Christopher Columbus and his time. Love the place!

this was the highlight of our excursion out of Huelva to La Rabida, Palos and Moguer. there are some really amazing pieces, especially the old choir from the 15th century. visits are possible only on a guided tour, scheduled several times every day. when we came, we were the only two visitors, so we had the whole tour and the whole monastery just for us - and enjoyed it really very much.

We sought out this place after reading TA reviews and we were not disappointed.
A couple of things to be aware of - the guide, lovely as he was, spoke in Spanish, so it was difficult to understand everything, despite my reasonable knowledge of the language. You can follow his commentary by glancing at the English leaflet which describes each of the different rooms (contact me if you would like me to send you the leaflet).
Also, this is a large and historical building, which is being restored and will be on-going for several years to come. There was some white washing taking place and some rooms were very dusty, but the rooms that had been renovated were of a very high standard.
A very interesting visit for just 3.50€ per person. The tour lasts from 30-45 minutes.

Santa Clara Monastery played an important role in securing funding for Columbus' plans to sail west to get to "India". The Abbess at the time happened to be the Aunt of King Ferdinand who Columbus lobbied to ask her nephew and his wife to fund his planned voyages. After several requests, Columbus was granted funds for the voyage. He also made and kept a vow to return to the Monastery after he safely returned.

Columbus is said to have spent the night of his return from his first expedition in1493 in prayer at this lovely convent, in fulfilment of the promise he made during the voyage. According to Francisco, the amazing guide, he had a strong connection with the convent and its mother superior, who was aunt to one of the monarchs.

No longer occupied by a religious order, the convent reflects the history of this part of Spain. The mudejar arches of the first, small cloister recall the rich and varied culture of Andalucia before the expulsion. The large cloister, single-storeyed on two sides, was copied throughout Colombia. A large relief of the Holy Family, revered for centuries, was attacked during the Civil War. The doors separating the nuns from the nave of the church bear breath-taking paintings in which you see the influence of Flemish painting and contact with the East.

The guide, Francisco, made the experience. He was prepared to speak so slowly, to look for what English he has, so that I don't think I missed more than a couple of points. His love for the place came through clearly; and I appreciated the fact that he didn't seem to mind that some exhibits interested me more than others.

You can visit on a guided tour only. During the summer, there are three in the morning and two in the late afternoon. Visits are in Spanish, but there is a small English-language leaflet about the convent.
