About
The appearance of the market can hardly be dissociated from the traditional city center and the Municipality of the Matosinhos County. It is a point of reference not only to the residents but also to the occasional visitor, many of which are tourists. Because of its location, it has to be seen as the anchor for urban and commercial revitalization of Matosinhos´s historical center.

After taking the tram (only gets you halfway) and then an Uber we were so disappointed. Hardly any stalls selling fresh fish. We were looking forward to choosing a fish and having it cooked on site. We left after 5 minutes and got the bus back to Porto. Felt we had wasted an entire morning. Maybe to chose a bad day (Friday) but sadly would not recommend.

A market hall in a modern building where you can buy almost everything. When we were there they were just closing.
The fish and seafood come straight from the fishing port and you can have everything you buy prepared in the restaurants along the side.

First time we visited the market. In the end we decided to catch fish (turbot) and eat right there. They prepare it for you at the moment and it is worth it. The other dishes were also very good and the waiters were very friendly. Without a doubt highly recommended.

A specific activity in the Porto region is to have your fish purchased locally on the market stalls and cookie by a restaurant owner for a sum of roughly 5 euros spécial for you. For this, We took the blue Metro line A towards MATOSINHOS (towards the port) and got off at MERCADO stop. The blue market is on your right. Do not hesitate to behave like the locals, the fish sellers are numerous, let yourself be tempted. Nice experience of local products upstairs fruit vegetables honey, poultry...

We decided to get the metro out to Senhora de Matosinhos. I thought the beaches and cruise line ports would be in this area. The only port activity we could see were loads of container ships, hidden behind railings. The beach area was about 3 miles away.
We did, however, walk back to the market. (The penultimate stop on the line). The market was fascinating. It was entirely for locals. Most of the ground floor was occupied by women running fish stalls. They were having a marvellous time, singing, dancing and laughing!
If you do go out to Matosinhos, get off at the market: continuing to Senhora de Matosinhos was not one of my better ideas!
Hence 4 stars for the market. Senhora de Matosinhos would struggle to get one.

A landmark building conceived in the 1930s but not completed until after the Second World War, this cavernous commercial space features a dazzling display of fish as well as restaurants, bars, other stalls and all sorts of other enterprises, as well as a very clean public toilet.
One of the big attractions is buying fish from the source and then getting the restaurant a few steps away to cook it for you, but the market experience is well worth ticking off even if you're not planning to eat at all. Great atmosphere.

Really a nice market, close to seaside. You can buy your fish and take it to the restaurant: they will cook it for you just for 6 euros. Instead, you can eat food from many restaurants around the fish market. Traditional and tasty

The Mercado in itself is not so big, but it has a good variety of stands selling fruits, vegetables and meat. Also, you con find some spices and herbs, but some are quit expensive. Finally, I found the number of restaurants available to be very short. It would be better if there were more restaurants.

This visit to the Mercado was well worth the trip to Matasinhos, wonderful fresh food and fish, fascinating, better idea than the worst lunch since arriving in Porto at Marisqueira de Matasinhos! Go by the Bus500 outside Sao Bento for €1.89 straight to the Mercado!

One of the best bus rides is from Porto centre to this market in nearby port Matsosinhos. All along the Atlantic coast and Douro river, to this wonderful market.Route 500, every 18 minutes .....
Best time to visit is before 10.00, when it's buzzing, later it is quiet. Great fish counters on lower level, and fruit, veg and livestock on top level; nice little cafes above level also, really friendly and extremely cheap.
