    The visit to the castle of Vila Viçosa is an interesting activity not only because of its state of conservation but also because of the two museums it houses, an archaeological and a hunting museum. The archaeological museum presents pieces from 3000 AD to the century. XIX, with a large spole of the I to III centuries of the common era. The hunting museum presents a collection of animals preserved by taxidermia of excellent quality, from birds, to ungulates, to large felines. The hunting weapons presented in the collection are also a good showcase of 19th and 20th century hunting weapons (beginning)

    The castle outside is nice. Can be parked, smoothly, right at the entrance It has 2 museums inside. The archaeology museum is fine. The hunting museum, we didn't like it, a glut of dead animals and shotguns The outside visit is also fine

    A beautiful castle, very well preserved, like almost everything in Vila Viçosa, of medieval origin. Inside there are homes and the beautiful church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The walkway can be walked along almost the entire wall, with stairs from stretch to stretch.

One of the places to visit in Vila Viçosa, it's where you learn a lot. Excellent archeology and hunting room. It's a shame that the latter lacks some animal identification.
The prohibition on photographing the interior is not understandable.

Vila Viçosa Castle is a visit not to be missed, for several reasons:

1. For the castle itself, which is very well preserved, and the surrounding trails, great for walks or short walks;

2. The archeology museum, which is possible to visit inside, and which is very well organized;

3. Finally, and most likely the biggest reason, the spectacular hunting museum.

The castle itself is not easily visible from the town. You can see the outer wall and entrance gates on difference sides but not the main inner keep, As such it is not particularly picturesque. And as you get near the main building housing a museum of hunting and archaeological items of different ages things don’t really improve. And having an aversion to seeing hunting trophies of animals we had no desire to enter.

An interesting place to visit. Entrance is free. There are several entrances and I chose the main one with its imposing gateway. The area inside the walls is quite large and there is a church and museum to visit inside the castle walls. There are also little streets with very small houses, one of which has a public WC. The origins of the castle date from the 13th century, when King Dinis I of Portugal ordered its construction.

We been to the village during Feast of the Immaculate Conception. So we almost
missed the opening hours of the castle / museum. We had to rush via the rooms as
the guards were locking each room behind us. Very interesting display of the rich.

The views are incredible. The rehabilitation of the building is fantastic and the maintenance is top notch. Exceptional cleaning and organization. The collections presented are in an excellent state of conservation. We loved it. It was very worth it. I will definitely go back. Congratulations

This monument is to Portugal what Versailles is for France. Yet, no visitors' management is available in other languages than Portuguese. If only the exhibits would be documented with some multilingual descriptive notes, foreign tourists would be awarded for spending some of their money in the Portuguese tourism economy. But halas: none of all this is in pmace.
Windows are barely opened in order to protect the many pieces of art, but non artificial light is added either. To top all these negative experiences, taking photos or videos is strictly forbidden and effectively enforced.
Given the high income price, this approach doesn't seem up to date.

The castle itself is not one of the greatest in Portugal but sure it is a nice walk you can have here. Inside the walls you have a church and a military museum. it's a good place to hide from the hot sun during summer days

Beautiful building with nice view but inside many archeological vestiges on the lower floor. Many hunting stuff from the beginning of the XX century in the second floor. We loved it!

Great archeology and hunting museum exhibit in the old barbican, massive italinate fortress on the old moorish citadele. The hunting exhibits are well done if a bit 'tally-ho' and may shock some sensibilities. In the lower caverns of the archeology including roman and megalithic remains, there are swarms of flies on the walls and the don't really bother you, but oh for a can of 'Raid' or 'Dum Dum' as its a bit overwhelming. The views from the castle roof are stunning. Best €3 value we had on our trip
