Ulcinj must have been a beautiful town in the past: a beach framed by rocks dominated by small towns of stone houses. But tourist overexploitation has made the place downright painful. The beach is crowded and dirty. Intense real estate activity has cluttered the landscape with hundreds of ugly buildings. Commerce there is particularly noisy. Everything is expensive. At night, the seaside becomes a real discotheque. The city seems to particularly attract a vulgar public, lovers of bling bling. It's spectacularly ugly and boring

The city has the whole potential to be amazing, close to the sea, old city, good weather. Unfortunately, the old city is not maintained at all, very dirty, a shame. Overcrowded, especially by night, loud music in a kind of open-air "clubs" with horrible music & sound system. Beaches are dirty, full of waster. Unfor a good example of how people can destroy history & nature.

To be honest, the old town seemed very small and it took quite a bit of time to walk through it. There was nothing special to see there. It seemed that it was more of a town of eateries, and there weren't too many of them. You can visit this place, but nothing happens if you don't go there.

The most horrendous noise until 1 am every night is extraordinary. Ulcinj is a lovely place but the awful trash house music that is played every night at massive volume, so it can be heard from kilometres away is just awful.
Don't come here.

Some people seem to dislike the old town, But things have changed, So no surprise that there are easting places etc.
These buildings cost a fortune to restore, And most are in excellent condition.
Do not go if unfit, and on a baking hot day, its a slog. Plenty to see if you have the stamina and time.
If eating some places hve really great views,,, possibly the best reason to go there
Thing is there's no local parking, so might be worn out before getting there !

The old town Ulcinj is a typical adriatic settlement near the sea, a fortress and small streets, everything made of stone, which is nice... However, I would definitely not reccommend going there in high season, ESPECIALLY not in the evening! It's crowded with people, dirty, full of funky smells and organised gypsy beggars with disabled children. As a tattoed woman, I felt really uncomfortable strolling around, since albanian men were literally staring at me as if I were some kind of a strange creature. Luckily, we went there just for one day, and our friends, local Montenegrins confirmed that Ulcinj town was not really the best choice at this time of the year.
What actually surprised me the most was the fact that mostly muslim population spends their vacation time there, as well as that there are quite a few mosques in the town; however, they have no problem drinking alcohol and behaving like animals in the evening. It just doesn't reflect the actual muslim culture...

I’ve visited the Old Town with friends in the summer. It’s very disappointing, not maintained at all. There’s nothing to do and do not even try to have a relaxing walk there.

Stayed a few days in a Ulcinj recently expecting a rather out of the way historic town on the Adriatic with a good climate. Being closer to the Albanian border in Montenegro we thought would put it a bit off the tourist track.
A nice climate it certainly has, and the ‘old town’ is pretty, although quite small and seemingly not the main feature of the town. Much more could be made of it. In any event, the historic aspect of the town is lost, in summer at least, by the influx of apartment dwelling sun-worshippers (mostly 18-25 year olds looking for action or families with young children who just want to be ‘beside the seaside’. Most flock in from the surrounding Balkan countries and vy for a pocket handkerchief space on crowded beaches with dirty sand (at least by Australian standards). Even with a car, which is virtually essential, there is still not much to do. Surprisingly for a country such as Montenegro, which has pre-accession EU status, the town lacks decent municipal infrastructure and cleanliness. Apart from a lucky few, dogs and cats are not properly looked after, waste and litter problems abound and just the general lack of organisation is evident everywhere.
Fortunately we found a very nice, clean hotel with helpful family owners and a sparkling pool overlooking the Adriatic. Otherwise the experience of Ulcinj could have been much worse. (Hotel reviewed separately to avoid linking it with the disappointment of Ulcinj as a whole.)

The town of Ulcinj is the most ugly I have ever seen. Summer tourism of the cheapest version you could ever imagine!
