I loved photographing the fishing boats moored near the Torre. It's the focal point of Pozzallo. Unfortunately, I just don't think that the townspeople really appreciate the beauty at their doorstep. Each time I visit I see more and more graffitti encroaching on the historic and ancient buildings. Sigh....

The imposing Cabrera Tower is the major built attraction in the Town of Pozzallo, Sicily. It was constructed of stone on behalf of the Spanish Count (Cabrera) of Modica - a nearby Baroque town - around the fifteenth century. The Tower, which marked the old port of Pozzallo, has been used as both a grain storage and a defense against pirates. It is possible to visit the Tower, check at the Tourist Office for opening hours. The downside is that this Tower right on the seafront at the town end of Pietre Nere Beach is in a poor condition and there is an absence of information in English. There is considerable potential to make much more of this wonderful relic of another age. Around the area are other old stone buildings that formed part of this old industrial, port area of Pozzallo, but you will need to seek them out. You can visit the nearby old church of Santa Maria di Port Salvo.

The evening I went local kids were the tour guides and they were very enthusiastic and informed. The entry was free and the tour was not long but I enjoyed the experience. This fort could be developed further but I think the same can be said about a lot of the south of Sicily. Lots of tourism potential.

Then Tower possesses immense history vital to this port city and it is great to visit and learn about the history here. However, the town of pozzallo is still learning how to a tourist town and does not take advantage of this gem. Include some information in other languages and employ someone to explain the history. The surrounding beaches are fantastic and highly underrated in the context for world beaches.

Unfortunately the Tower was closed and there was no way that I could know when it would be opened to the public. I just went around it from the outside and I must say it's a gem of a place and it's a pity that it was closed. However nearby Cabrera Tower you can go to nice restaurants or pizzeria's or even better have a swim at the Baia Raganzino...it's an awesome beach with clear crystal water.

Not much in way of sights but has a bit of history. The surrounding Piazza and restaurants / bars is a nice place to hangout in the evening.

Salve! Per il 25 aprile farò un piccolo tour di Ragusa e tra le tappe passerò da Pozzallo. Vorrei sapere esattamente gli orari di apertura della torre in quella giornata. Grazie!
