Work started on this fabulous cathedral in 1107, but through a series of misadventures including lack of roof beams, sieges and the resultant damage, it was rebuilt to its current Baroque style by 1772. The Chapel of Our Lady of Madia is dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the miracle of the Madonna icon appearing in the harbour.
Don’t be fooled by the plain, beige brown exterior because it’s the interior that explodes into life. The rich marbles, ornate paintings, decorated altars, artifacts and sculptures all conspire to take your breath away in an awe-inspiring view. Just plain beautiful, a hidden gem that gleams…

While the bell tower is the town's tallest structure seen from everywhere, the Basilica is packed in old town tiny streets on a small square.
Like I witnessed in many places in southern Italy and Sicily, a pretty modest and simple exterior hides spectacular interiors. That's also the case here, in this Baroque Basilica in old town Monopoli - amazing marble art inside with a beautiful altar.

We took a one-day trip in Monopoli and wanted to visit the main attraction of the town. The Basilica is located in the amazing Old Town, so we found it easily. It was built between 1742-1772 in Baroque style. We read in reviews that „a pretty modest and simple exterior hides spectacular interiors” we wanted to see it. Unfortunatelly it was under renovation, it was closed. We were a bit dissapointed but the town and Puglia is so faboluos, we decided to return in the future.

A stunning Catheral set in a small square. Great photo opportunities all day as the light and shadow change. The inside is equally stunning, with lots of granite carvings on a huge scale. Free to visit, and you can photograph inside.

Squeezed in among so many buildings, this cathedral is hard to get a decent photo from outside. But inside it's amazing. Beautiful main altar, with lots of side altars. The walls and ceilings are richly decorated, and topped with cupolas.

We've seen so many cathedrals and churches this week, they are all starting to look the same, but this is lovely, tucked away in a side street, so you might just miss it. Lovely square and it's free to get into. Worth a visit whilst wandering the beautiful streets of Monopoli.

The most interesting church of the city. What impressed me most was the main altar, it has kind of a second floor where they allow people to visit. At there you have a great and panoramic View of all the place. Big and beautiful paintings all around, natural day Light coming from the high windows give this place a perfect atmosphere to pray. Great place to visit.

Although everyone said, Oh you must see the cathedral in Monopoli, I was completely taken by surprise by the majesty of this place. The money pored into the cathedral-- it is opulent, filled with lush marble, wood, gold, paintings and statues. Simply GORGEOUS and a must see.

Among several churches (most of them barely accessible due to irregular or unknown opening times) in Monopoli, the basilica stands out as the definite must-see spot. Fabulous interior with its rich decor will surely leave no one unimpressed!
