The cathedral was erected near the site of a Roman temple and burial site. Work began on it in 1107 so it is one of the oldest cathedral in Italy . Unfortunate As I just came late to Mopoli I could admire only exterior of now Baroque of the Cathedral, as they closed it 5 min to noon. The exterier is stunning.

Experience a great example of what Lecce has to offer. A beautiful basilica in the Centro Storico. Worth a visit.

This beautiful church built in 1772, has elegant decorations outside but not much color compared to the ornate Baroque architecture with white, yellow, green, and red marble inside.

When visiting Monopoli, take a stroll through the ancient, narrow streets and go see the Basilica. A grand and well kept, beautiful church.

A wonderful cathedral with fantastic stonework - wonderful colours in the stone and some remarkable carving and finishing, it is beyond the great work you come to expect in Italy. Easy to get to, plenty of access within. You can spend a few minutes or much longer enjoying this place.

Although everyone said, Oh you must see the cathedral in Monopoli, I was completely taken by surprise by the majesty of this place. The money pored into the cathedral-- it is opulent, filled with lush marble, wood, gold, paintings and statues. Simply GORGEOUS and a must see.

The most interesting church of the city. What impressed me most was the main altar, it has kind of a second floor where they allow people to visit. At there you have a great and panoramic View of all the place. Big and beautiful paintings all around, natural day Light coming from the high windows give this place a perfect atmosphere to pray. Great place to visit.

A Saturday morning visit delivered more than expected. A local wedding was taking place so I stayed to watch. For ladies always remember to carry a long scarf or beach wrap to throw over your shoulders as it is respectful to cover your shoulders. Glad I did as I was able to witness this.
