It's a long way up, but the price is very reasonable and the views are exceptional. There is so much interesting history related to this place. The cliffs are over 70 millions years old. It is nice to go in the fall when all the leaves are colored, and it is a little bit cooler. It's worth it to walk... More

Externsteine is a cultural object with a tainted history. The Nazi's thought it to be a Germanic sanctuary, although there is no visible evidence to tie it to Germanic use, the rocks were there when those tribes roamed the land. That awesome idea is always present when you climb these extremely steep rocks. But the view is astonishing. The park... More

I went here with my Girlfriend. At first we took a train out there. Where we walked quite a bit to find it. It was worth seeing for me because of the history and geology of the site. There is a very good small museum there that was free. The forest in this area was beautiful. For 3€ you can... More

These narrow columns of sandstone rocks attract about half a million visitors every year. This very exciting earthly domain invites the geologists to explore the history of rocks. The distinctive rock formation, as we understood, was created through a natural process. This amazing site provided us an opportunity to climb one of the pre-history monuments of the world. Besides climbing... More

Only a couple of Kilometers outside of Detmold (and with very good signs to direct you there) this is a very interesting geological feature. There is an Information shop explaining the history and the geological Background of the rocks, you can climb a couple of them and enjoy the great view. A couple of hiking trails are also around. Parking... More

Wow! This was a great find in Germany. The park is about 20 minutes from Paderborn - about 2 hrs from Düsseldorf. You'll need a couple Euro for parking. Once you park, even if the gift shop is closed you can still walk to the site. I visited twice, it's an easy walk from the parking area. Once there, you'll... More

We had a super morning. The exhibition was do interesting. We did not go up the rocks as we had our dog with us. We walked the A2 circular path which was well signposted and an easy walk. I would visit again when we are in Detmold again.

This was one of my favorite places to visit. The hike back to it is worth it. The view from on top of the rocks was amazing.

You can look around Externsteine for free, but to gain access up onto the rocks you have to pay; these can be purchased on site and a "combo" ticket can be purchased that can be used at Hermannsdenkmal. I'd suggest visiting here on a dry day as it is all outdoors. There are some nice woodlands/meadows to walk through and... More

Nice to see if you are in the area. I would not advice a big detour for going to see it. Entrance fee is €3, which i find a good price. Parking has a day tariff of €2.50.
