easy to access and walk around. The church looked abandoned tho and no access for entry. The bells were ringing tho - and sounded amazing

Around 780 there already was a wooden church here. In 1225 a stone church in Roman style was built to replace it. Of this original structure little is left as in 1462 a larger new building was erected in late gothic style to replace most of it. 15th century parts are still very well visible in the northern facade of the present-day church. In 1870 the church structure was thorougly revised and got its final shape: rather modern neogothic style. Note especially the western section.

I liked the interior more than the (confusing) exterior of the church. Though it is a catholic church, inside it is rather modest and sober. Gray is the dominating color. Perhaps because of this the central (Flemish) altar piece stands out. It is beautiful.

This late Gothic style church was built around 1661 / 62 but it was expanded in 11th century and then in 13th century. We saw the church tower and visited this place but it was closed. It looks like a very nice old church. Well, we will be back again in this small town.
