Visited on a whim as I was cycling past the small ferry port and the ferry had just come in. My decision was based on reading a nearby notice board which highlighted recent excavations at the north end of the island which were of such importance that the island is now a UNESCO site. These are underwater remains of Iron Age/Celtic settlement which one could see as the water is so clear. The Island itself is tiny and can be covered in 15 minutes. The former gardener's house is now a small museum which shows some of the artefacts uncovered by excavation. To visit the interior of the 'casino' you have to buy a ticket and do it as a tour. We did this reluctantly and waited ten minutes for the tour to start - turns out it was only me and my husband! The guide, a historian, started off in German, but switched to English when she realised I wasn't following. There are only a few rooms to visit, but the background is interesting, and sad to think Ludwig actually drowned near here in suspicious circumstances. The guide told us there was a storm moving in and so us and four other tourists took the ferry back. If you need to leave the island, and the ferry is on the other side, there is a large bell to summon him! I found the island to be very interesting , but it is small, and there is not a huge amount to see apart from the house, restored rose garden and small museum. On a sunny day, there are some lovely little gazebos with beautiful views over the lake.

Roseninsel is an island (the only island) in Lake Starnberg. A 4 euro (roundtrip) fare for the short ferry ride (passengers only) is about 20-30 minutes walk from the Feldafing and Posenhofen S-Bahn stops. The island is tiny with restored rose garden and "casino" (villa or cottage) built by Maximilian in the early 1860s. Great views of the alps off to the south of the lake and an information point explaining prehistoric diggings found in shallow waters just off the northeast point and designated yet another UNESCO site. There is no admission fee for the island but a small one (@2-3 euros) for a tour of the casino. Limited interior decor but still a nice diversion to have a a sense of royal middle-European taste of the era.

"....Rose Island in Lake Starnberg is the only island in the lake and site of a royal villa of King Ludwig II of Bavaria which had been commissioned by his father. Guests on the island were the composer Richard Wagner, his close friend Prince Paul of Thurn and Taxis, Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Czarina Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. The villa is today a small museum, open to the general public" Wikipedia
When we were there in September there was a guided to to the small castle there at about 13:20
There is also a small boat Dirgin you to the island from the shore
In the garden you will find the actual roses that wet planted there since 1800's and early 1900's
Make sure to smell them and the see the difference is small of each rose 🌹

After finding ourselves with a spare half day we decided to make the trip out to the Casino on Rose Island. The villa is an interesting place to visit, with some exquisite touches, but is much plainer than Maximillian II's other residences. It must have been a lovely retreat in its time. The real treat here is the restored circular rose garden which was just coming into bloom when we visited.
The only way to see the inside of the villa is through a guided tour in German (at a cost of 3,50 euros per person). These run on Tuesday-Sunday afternoons (tours run hourly in the week and half-hourly at weekends) and last about half an hour (covering the history of the island as much as the building itself). Tickets should be purchased from the nearby gardener’s house which also sells an english language map guide to Feldafing Park and Rose Island.
The small ferry runs visitors across the water on demand for a small charge (still priced at 4 euros return). Many people were visiting just to see the roses or to sunbathe, rather than to visit the villa itself. The island offered a nice blend of sunny spots and shade, though it's not huge.
There is no cafe on the island, nor at the ferry stages, so any food or drink needs to be brought with you.
To get to the ferry we took the S-Bahn to Feldafing and walked along Bahnhof Strasse for a short way before taking a right turn that led us onto a footpath ending at the Maffei-Kapelle. From here we crossed Tutzinger Strasse and took another footpath through the golf course which brought us to the landing stage for ferries to Roseninsel (Platanen-Rondell). I think there are a few variations on this route from the signposts we saw.

While walking along the lake in Starnberg, we came across a sign point at the direction of “Roseninsel” or Rose Island. So we continued walking until we reached the boat which takes people to the Island for 4 Euro each in a 4 min trip. The island is fairly small and quite with different types of rose trees planted throughout the island with labels describing their origin. The center of the island is the best place with beautiful nice-selling roses.

It is necessary to cross to an island by ferryboat. We visited at 16:30 on May 5. It was the last tour at 17:00. The staff of the ferryboat ignored three travelers and left the pier. The staff is wanting to go home early. He has not turned to tourist business.

a lovely rose island in lake starnberg with king ludwig 1st's small residence. it's a short wooden boat ride to this island....an island full of nature surrounded by breathtaking view of the lake and the alps. open during summers only. you can relax by the bank of the lake with friends and family having a picnic. a ticket is only needed for the residence museum. only few rooms are shown not all. a lovely relaxing den indeed.

My husband and I had found mixed reviews of the ferry boat service to Rose Island (Roseninsel) when planning our Bavaria trip so we were very pleasantly surprised by the congenial operator and friendly group of German college students who shared our boat ride. The island is so small we struggled to imagine Ludwig II racing around it on horseback as a young man! While blooms in the famous rose garden were mostly out of season, the island staff proved quite friendly, and the woman who served as our guide of the Max II-built villa gamely tackled the English text as we passed through the simple, mostly smaller-sized rooms. Besides seeing that the "extravagant" King Ludwig II was quite capable of inhabiting more simple surroundings, we had the sobering experience of gazing across Starnbergersee in the direction of Berg (near which Ludwig II drowned) knowing that the weather conditions of the present day were very similar to the day the King died.

The rose garden dates back to mid of the 19th century when the island was a retreat of the kings of Bavaria (including Ludwig II). Neglected over decades it now has a beautiful collection of historic roses. Also interesting the Casino, the retreat built for Max Josph II King of Bavaria.

We visited Roseninsel, Rose Island, in early June and while there is a small garden of roses, it is not that dramatic. It is a rather unique place to visit.
