This castle was built in the 12th century. Once the domicile of the Counts of Wertheim, the castle is one of the most picturesque ruins in Germany with a deep moat and impressive bulwark. In 1618 the castle was partly destroyed by an explosion; during the Thirty Years' War in 1634 and 1647 it was under heavy fire. Today the... More

This is one of the highlights when you visit Wertheim. Many different parts of the castle to see and explore. Great views of the old town and river from the castle.

We walked up the hill to this castle. It was a fairly energetic trip because when you arrive at the castle there are still lots of stairs to climb. The view is well worth the effort and although the castle is a ruin it is still lovely to see.

We took a little train round trip to the castle, near the bottom we enjoyed a beer and some lunch. The portions are very large so we split and still left food on our plates. Prices were reasonable considering the view and location. The castle was very neat with wonderful views, we walked all the way to the top. Some... More

What a beautiful view we had from the top of the castle. I was able to take tons of great photos there. We took the choo choo train up and then back down. This sure beat that strenuous walk if not. Just nice to have seen much of what was left of the castle.

Enjoyed wandering around the castle ruin. Lots of areas and several levels to wander around and investigate. Costs a 2 euro coin as entry fee. Definitely worth the visit.

We really enjoyed exploring the ruins of this castle. Construction began in the 12th century, and it was extended from the 15th - 17th centuries. It's a very large and romantic ruin to explore. Great views of the town from different vantage points. We had a pleasant stop at the cafe, where we ordered sodas that were served in tremendous... More

Visited here during our stay - fascinating ruins. Loved the fact that goats were grazing away on the grounds.

We liked this castle very much and climbed all over it. Great views, and splendid atmosphere. A proper castle. You can get there with the quirky gecko train and walk down.

Had no particular expectations when visiting this castle but it turned out to be a minature Heidelberg red sandstone structure with open access to all parts. Just a €2 coin in the turnstile to gain entrance and then you could climb to your heart's content with railings and added steps to assist you. Climb right high above the river and... More
