The crew is fabulous, the sights incredible, whales, turtles, dolphins and rays all day. A sea ballet! Explanations, and responsible quality whale watching. All of us loved every minute and love going over what we saw... And then you get the professional photos online of your day out. Nearly too much! Well with the price. Ça vaut chaque centime. Une sorte inoubliable pour chacun, adultes, ados et enfants. Plein les yeux. Merveilleux. Et une équipe répondante et respectueux des animaux observés. Je recommande chaudement

We went on our 7 hour trip on the 29th Of August. We were greeted by the Decouverte du vivant staff by name. They had tried to phone us the night before to check everything was ok . They told us what to expect and reassured that if we needed to know anything just to come and ask . We had bought a packed lunch for the delay which had been made clear on the website. We were the only English speaking family on the boat trip we did not expect the information to be given in English as the rest of the boat was French speaking .We did however ask questions during the day which were brilliantly answered. The trip was amazing and we managed to see loads of Dolphins and two whales which was just amazing. The team were obviously really respectful the the wild life but made the trip as successful as possible for those on board. The trip was VERY competitively priced and we were very satisfied by the Day.

For the royal sum of over 80€ per person we booked a day trip to see dolphins and whales in the mediterranean sea. I liked the fact, that there was a marine biologist on the boat commenting on the different species. Plus their approach was very respectful towards the Animals, without harrassing them. I've had bad experiences with these kind of wildlife-tours in other countries, so definitively a plus for that. However there is a downside to the really nice encounters we've had with two whales and several dolphins. First of all, no comments or documentation is offered in any other language than french. Although my french is decent, it was very hard to follow the explanations full of specialized vocabulary. I know its common in France to demand of tourists to know french, but this is very uninviting to foreign-language customers - and even for tourists who know some french, but are not perfectly fluent. The second downside which stroke me as odd was the fact, that on a 7 hour tour (basically the whole day) there was no food offered on the boat and no clear information on the website to bring your own food. So good luck with starving to death while watching dolphins.. They sell coffee, softdrinks, crackers and biscuits though, all of which have to be paid extra, since nothing is offered by the crew. I've been on many boat tours in different countries and never experienced anything as uninviting in terms of food. The most annoying aspect of this journey though was the fact, that there were too many guests on a kind of boat, which was obviously not designed for observing nature. They write on their website that they only fill the boats with 100 people max instead of 160, which they would be allowed, for reasons of it being more comfortable. Still 100 people is way too many. If youre unlucky you dont get a seat outside or on the Observation deck, but you have to sit inside and watch the animals through a window - or you stand the whole time. On the observation deck people are blocking the view from all directions as soon as there is a sighting. This is just not what I expect for 80 € and I feel that this Organisation is trying to make some easy money by packing the ships. Dont be fooled by the nice animals you get to see - the Service is lousy and if you have any higher standards than just wanting to see whale&dolphin at any price I would advice you to look for another organisation (and probably one not in France).

Response from Choucador, Front Office Manager at Découverte du Vivant

Hi, We're sorry you were disapointed by your trip with us. Hopefully this answer will shed light on a few of the points you have : - Thanks for noticing the respectful approach, we've always worked that way and we are deeply involved in the "high quality whale watching" label - 82€ for a 7hrs trip is pretty cheap, compared to almost any whale watching operation throughout the world. It's even more true regarding the fact we have two teams working on board, the crew and the naturalist guides. - We indeed do not offer any english written documentation on board about the whales and dolphins of the Mediterranean. We do have a library on board, but it is french only. - If i had noticed you were only comfortable in english, i'd have come to you and tell you to ask me any question about our observations, as i always do when foreign customers are on board. We do not speak english every time on board, because more than 95% of our customers are french speaking, but we'd love it to change ! - Regarding the meal, i'm very sorry you had to endure a full day without food. Contrary to what you wrote on your comment, it is written on our website to bring your own food. Once more, you should have come to us us when you noticed no food was served. We'd find a way to share something from the crew. - Finally, regarding the number of guests on board, we indeed do limitate it to 100instead of 160 max. I'm sorry you felt you could not see properly. We do indicate where to look when the cetaceans show up, and people tend to aggregate on one side or another. But there is always a good spot to find ! Especially since we spend time with the animals, so everyone can enjoy the view. We'd be glad to have you back on board to change your point of view, and have a better experience. Best regards, Aurélien Guay

DdV is organising trips from may to October. Leaving in the morning and back by 18.30. Great explanation by experts and great captain. Narration is in French but English translation can be provided. The rest of the crew is also doing a great job. Been out with them several times. Coffee, soft drinks and some snacks are available. Please bring your lunch in an ice chest. Don't forget your motion sickness pills. The mediterranean can be choppy. The trip is often cancelled because of rough sea. During the summer months they go out several times a week.
