We took this route while staying in Colmar taking the D417 through Munster and joining the route just after the Col de le Schluck. What a drive. Very enjoyable with good views; a chance to really put the car through its paces. It is short enough to combine with a visit to Mulhouse and the fantastic car and railway museums. A round trip of just over 60 mles if you take the D430/D83 back to Colmar.
A note of warning: at weekend the route attracts bikers so pick mid-week for the greatest enjoyment.

Wonderful drive along the crest of the Vosges with regular car parking areas for photos and for enjoying the far reaching views. We drove up to Grand Ballon and walked up to the peak which was windy but breathtaking. Auberges are dotted along the route which is rich in wild flowers, meadows, forests and lakes.

If you like Canyons, sightseeing and silence, go to this route. It's wondeful. You can drive and stop for pictures, relaxing, think about life while you look up to the Canyons.

The Routes des Cretes covers a fair distance and gives opportunities for many enjoyable and scenic drives in some really beautiful countryside. Simply choose the section you want - and off you go.

I've always liked the sleepy, peaceful ambience of Lorraine and the Vosges mountains must surely be one of the most beautiful areas of France. The mountains are much lower than those of the high Alps and, as a result, they are heavily forested, which adds a real lushness to the overall scenery. From a driving point of view, whereas this means that you don't get the craggy and dramatic mountain passes, you get wonderful sweeping roads through forests and across lush Alpine valleys. For stress-free driving and sheer enjoyment - it doesn't get much better than this.

We drove the Route from Cernay to Col du Bonhomme in one day. Stops at National Cemetery at Vieil-Armand, Auberge Ferme du Freundstein, Grand Ballon, Le Hohneck and La Linge (just off the route).

Beautiful drive - especially in a driving machine - sports car or motorcycle. We did not get the panoramic views from the peaks for which we had hoped since it was overcast. We highly recommend the ferme auberges for meals - do not go off the route.

If we had another day, we would have done some short hikes in the parks - stunning scenery.

Highly recommended

This is the second time we drove the route de cretes. Last year in summer and this year in autumn. We were lucky to have a reasonably bright day with a little sunshine now and then. So with the different colours foliage it is also very pretty. We went north to south, from Ste Marie aux Mines to the Grand Ballon. The route has plenty of places where you can safely stop by the side of the road to enjoy the scenery. For hikers it is really a great place.

This road is an excellent way to enjoy great views and stop along the way to explore. It extends from St Marie aux Mines to Cernay, but you may begin from le Col du Bonhomme. Tip: start early and if you chose to travel on a weekend day, go north to south to avoid most traffic moving in the opposite direction.

One of the best areas in Europe for motorcycle touring. See my review of the Hotel Panoramic for a great place to stay. Need something cheaper, see my review of the hotel on Col du Bussang. June is the best month, avoid during the Tour de France.

The Route des Cretes goes along the top of the Vosges mountains and offers the most amazing range of walks which are well signposted, You can walk a little way or a very long way, but are always certain of the most astounding views. There are restaurants on the tops of a few summits which you can either drive to or walk to and sit and admire the view over coffee of beer (or even a meal). To make it all even better there will often be the tinkling of cow bells in the background.

It's an area steeped in history and walking in the mountains will bring you into contact with WW1 trenches and Maginot Line structures. You just cannot get bored up here and if walking doesn't appeal, driving along the route is almost as picturesque.
