About
Coronavirus 2019-nCoV In connection with the current situation, Loket Castle is closed from 18 December 2020 until further notice to the public. The Loket castle, built of stone, is more than 800 year old settlement, positioned on a granite rock that is runaround by the river of Ohre. It was most probably founded as a frontier fortress. The castle served to kings, Lords of Schlick and Lords of Plauen, Loket´s townsmen and it was used as prison in 19th and 20th century. Shortly after 1989, it was open for public. The tour leads through expositions of porcelain, collections of former town museum, museum of arms to the premises of former prison where an impressive and authentic demonstration of torture can be seen.

Our first night in the Czech Republic was in the cutest wee town you’re likely to encounter. Confined by the river - which almost describes a complete circle – the town occupies the almost-island in the centre. It’s dominated by an 800 year old castle and a town square right out of cut-out cardboard toy land – tall, elaborately decorated frontages, brightly painted and surrounding a cobbled town centre with three fountains and a tall Christian-focussed monument. And so few people around. The castle is a rabbit warren of passages, staircases and interconnecting rooms with an eclectic collection of stuff still being catalogued. Headstones from “extinct” nearby cemeteries are propped against walls including one for Rabbi Benjamin from Renaissance times. The building also sports a gruesome and extensive torture and imprisonment display in the basement which is definitely not for the faint-hearted. In fact torture exhibits, we discovered, were very popular in the CR – we found at least one in almost every town or city.

Beautiful castle, the city is very nice. Good food, pretty sights. The torture chamber was a bit much, but that's okay, haha.

One of the most beautiful and biggest castles I have ever visited. The architecture, the tower, the view, the little museums inside the castle… everything was so authentic and full of history.

if you can stomach it, visit the "come to life" torture chambers...! Quite the historic place and very well maintained. Enjoy some very good and cheap food (incl. some of the best beers of the region).
