One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. And I have already seen a lot of them. The church looks nothing special from outside, but when you enter, you just remain without words. The frescoes are amazing. Outside there are also some interesting tombstones. Highly recommended!

Rather nondescript from the outside but absolutely overwhelming on the inside. The interior is completely covered in beautiful frescoes. It has a very Medieval feel with rough floors and modest plain seating. It is a wonderful experience visiting.

This is a small church and no one will except such beautiful paintings inside. My book guide was a bit old but usually right about entrance price (+/- 1 lv). Here there was no price so the 10 lv/ adults was very surprising and honestly a bit much because there is no explanation, no restoration. Maybe it is just to pay the entrance lady.

Wonderful 17th century church with frescoes. In pretty much original condition. Frescoes have been cleaned but not repaired. No photos allowed. Here with a river cruise group so it is not clear if this is open to the public in general.

The exterior predisposes, and I suspect some people may have opted not to enter based solely on the exterior. The inside consists of small chambers filled, as in every square inch, with beautiful frescos. One chamber has all the female saints, another the biblical stories beginning with Genesis, and another features the Wheel of Fortuna (Fortune) from Classicism applied to the life a mere mortal passing through this world. The frescos are beyond beautiful, and the spiritual feeling arising from the frescos, the intimate chambers, and the low, domed ceilings is exquisite. Our guide was a young man who was very knowledgeable. He showed us the chamber that was long and narrow and explained that centuries ago the worshippers would eat there together after the service, the wealthy and the poor together, and they would speak of their problems and hardships and those who could would help. The church was damaged in the last earthquake. Hopefully, it will not happen again. I hope the restoration can both repair and preserve the gorgeous interior. I saw many things in my recent trip to 5 Eastern European countries, but the place that I think of daily and many times a day is this church. God is there.

This old church, while small, has one of the most well preserved, gorgeous murals in Bulgaria. Its interior is full of many murals and you will feel overwhelmed once get in. Combine this visit with the Konstantsalieva house just 2 mins walk will be a perfect visit for this Arbanasi village.

During our stop in Arbanassi, we has the privilege of touring the oldest churches dating to the 15th century as well as an acapella presentation of several chants sung by the monks of the church. There are three areas of the church (watch your head when entering) including the men’s section, women’s section and a gallery with a chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist. I have never seen so many original paintings and frescoes in a church relatively small in size compared to other European churches. We had an English-speaking guide who explained what we were seeing. The men’s section is the oldest part of the church and has a mural of the “Last Judgement” and the “Nativity”. The murals in the women’s section focus on the “Life of the Virgin Mary” and “The Tree of Jesse” among others. The main focus of the gallery is on the “Wheel of Life” which includes the signs of the Zodiac.

This church is beautiful! The outside of the building gives no clue to the treat waiting within. I understand that the reason for the church being so unchurchlike externally is due to the orthodox population being controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The inside of the church is covered entirely by frescoes. Please be aware that no photography is allowed inside the building but postcards can be bought from a small nearby shop. This church is definitely worth a visit!

This was a very old church with paintings on many walls of the Nativity. The church was several hundred years old and was quite impressive--it was definitely a worthwhile visit.
