Abashiri faces the Sea of Okhotsk and its port serves as a cargo terminal for the northeast section of Hokkaido. It is a large fishing port and is used for coastal fishing and for deep sea fishing (salmon) when it is not icebound. Seafood restaurants are located close to the port. The port is best observed from the tourist cruise vessels that are stationed in the port and is not really a tourist attraction; rather, it is a working port. Visited 2/19/2018

you can feel cool air coming from sea and enjoy small walk around but not much to see. So if you are staying at Abashir then take a walk but not much recommended.

We left Sapporo by car in the morning and arrived Abashiri port in evening. We stop many times along the way to enjoy side seeing so it took us longer than normal. Abashiri port is really peaceful and enjoyable. We could feel breeze from the sea. We stopped by small seafood shop to buy giant crab and ate it there. It was very delicious and fresh. Then we bought milk ice cream which they handmade right there. Oh...really really the best ice cream that we ever had before.

We docked here and stayed for the day here before sailing onto Russia. Was a good shopping area and good place to buy gifts
