Drove by along edge of Lake Notoro. The lake shores were frozen but not the middle. This lake turns red during summer due to red algae growth.

We have read that the best season is during September but we were told by some locals that the "coral grass" was still nice so we made a trip there. Unfortunately that's not true. The majority of coral grass has already turned to dull brown, it's no longer spreading like endless red carpets. We can imagine when in full bloom the scene would be quiet nice, however the entire place is indeed quie small. Not sure if it's worth to drive all the way to Abashiri for this. Luckily, Abashiri has 2 other attractions that well worth a visit: the historical prison (the prison museum) and Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples.

Visited end of Sept 2017 and the coral grass are still red in colour. We expected there to be more coral grass, there is probably other sites we didn't visit.
