Gon Shrine is located under the ropeway, with an approach to the shrine next to the Mount Senkoji Ropeway base station. There are many shrines and temples in Onomichi, but this shrine, founded in the early Heian period, is said to be the oldest. As a historic shrine, there is a sacred camphor tree on the grounds that is over 900 years old. This shrine is also famous as the location for the film "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. One thing I wanted to know but couldn't find out was the origin of the shrine's name. Generally, Gon Shrines are built to the northeast of castles to seal off the evil spirits when castles are built, but I don't think there is a castle to the southwest of this shrine. It's a bit confusing.

One of the old temple in Onomichi.
this temple has big old OAK.
This temple is near Senko-ji ropeway.
If you go to Senko-ji,you can go to this temple before Senko-ji.
