I rent an electric assisted bicycle at Setoda sightseeing guide office close to Ikuo Hiranuma Museum (US$6-7 for 4 hours. regular bicycle half the price) and crossed this bridge and back to Ikuchi island and took the other side of the island to go to Tatara Big Bridge to go to Ohmishima island (from this island to Imabari, the islands belong to Ehime Pref. Ikuchi to Onomichi, islands belong to Hiroshima pref.) and visited Sanctuary of Cyclist monument and came back. About 4 hours including rest and picture taking time. You can cross bridges on a separate way only for walkers and cyclers so do not worry about cars and all the direction instructions in the islands and bridges were perfect. Bridge crossing fee is now free(used to be paid)

We did the shimanami Kaido bike route from Onomichi to Imabari Japan. The route is 75 km long and passes over at least 5 islands. The route is very well marked and there are rental bikes that you can get in Onomichi and drop off at your destination. The route passes through small towns, farmers fields, orange groves. There are suspension bridges linking the islands. There are cultural sites and lots of restaurants along the way. I highly recommend this to any cyclists who want to do a trip in Japan. We did it in a day but you could easily extend it over 2 days. There are a few hills but the grades are not steep and most of the trail is separated from traffic.

This is one of seven large bridges connecting Honshu with Shikoku as a part of the famous 70-km Shimanami Kaido. It has a sepentine ramp at both ends, so it's not too steep to manage, even with 40kg of kit strapped to the bike. Walkers are welcome on the paths, too. The views are outstanding, almost magical.

This is the second bridge on the Shimanami Kaido Cycleway going from Onomichi. The bike path on this bridge is on top of the bridge but in a lane that is separate from the traffic. It's a beautiful bridge with a gorgeous view.

Cross the bridge over the top, separate to cars and motorbikes, signs in English. Cannot ride a bicycle on the expressway without the police quickly trailing behind you! Bridge is free for bicycles for the next couple of years.
Can rent a bicycle from numerous places along the Shimanami Sea Road for 1,000 yen per day, with a 1,000 yen deposit refundable if you return the bicycle by 5pm to the place of rental. Best part of the ride is probably the coastal stretch between Innoshima and Omishima over Ikuchi island. Worth visiting Kosanji temple (1000 yen) in Setoda and stopping for ice-cream at Dolche, midway between Innoshima and Setoda. Sunset Beach, between Setoda and Omishima, is also nice for a swim.

This ride is one of the coolest things I've done in Japan. The views are breathtaking and it's a ride even novices can handle.
It's relatively flat and the most challenging slopes are the climbs onto the bridges but considering they're built to be a 3% gradient, people who don't frequently ride can handle them.
One thing I will say is though, get a bike with gears. I consider myself pretty fit but I'd find this much tougher with a bike without gears.
You can hire a geared bike at Onomichi near the station for ¥2,000 and if you take it back on the same day, you get ¥1000 back. If you drop it off at any of the other bike rental points, you won't get a refund.
With that in mind, we rode for 32kms and did a U-turn back to Onomichi to clock up 64kms for the day.
Spectacular views (see photos), you forget you're exercising!

we did Shimanami Kaido by car and it gives a very nice view of the beautiful Japanese Inner Sea, passing 6 islands by bridges. Toll is high.
