There is a small staircase on the way up the mountain. There are cat-themed decorations along the way, including cats painted on the walls and on the ground, stones painted as cats, a small shrine with cat-themed decorations, and cat-themed displays. Space, as for whether you can see a real cat? It's just luck ~ Don't really think there are a bunch of cats hanging around here!

Friends and I were visiting Senkoji Park and decided to talk down the mountain via Cat Alley. To be honest, we found it a bit underwhelming. There weren't many cats, many of the cafes we read about were closed, and the path itself was pretty short. Having said that, we were walking down the mountain anyway, and it the path we took happened to take us through Cat Alley, why not? It was pleasant and interesting enough. Perhaps if more cafes had been open we would have enjoyed ourselves more.

This collection of run down buildings and alleys meanders up the hillside near Senkoji. It houses cat themed shops and cafes. There is also the cat museum which is an eccentric collection of brac-a-brac dedicated to cats. Although you did have to pay to enter - there is an honest box - it does contain a room dedicated to Onomichi born film director Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, who is most famous for the film House. Plus a sort of shrine to the actress Tomoyo Harada. Neither of these were advertised outside.

What a shock to see cats trapped in this narrow caged path, pacing up and down, their natural instincts suppressed. Is this for tourist's benefit? Better to avoid this area and see cats happily asleep elsewhere.

A really cramped alley with some cafes, many stone cat statues, a museum, and one cat outside and he was there because the guy wanted to charge 500 to play with it. Just a passing through in the walk from the observatory and museum end down to the temples, but I saw many more cats inside other temples, along the walk, and in shopping areas.

First of all these narrow trails are typical trail in Onomichi. While walking along the way you surely will see many cats walking sleeping anywhere .All of them looks so happy and satisfied because there are plenty of narrow spaces for cats. You can also find souvenir shop which sells cats' goods and cafe too.

A cute little walk through some lovely narrow alleys up and down the hillside - a pleasant way to spend an hour or so.

Good
1) Cute - photogenic - some lovely views and nice buildings
2) Easy to follow - the path looks after itself and because it is on a slope you can see roughly where you are
3) Nice cafes and shops to browse in
4) Soothing green all around
5) A nice way to walk DOWN from the top - go up on the cable car and wander down the hill

Comments
1) Green = mosquitos
2) Almost everything closes on a Thursday
3) A lot of abandoned buildings being left to decay
4) The famed view contains a lot of heavy industry

Cat Alley was not quite what I was expecting. My wife and myself love cats so we always try to pick out cat attractions when traveling. We were excited about Cat Alley and visited after visiting the temple on the hill. As we made our way down from the temples we made our way to the start of the alley. My first thought was it looked run down almost like slums you see on hill sides in other countries. The atmosphere was a bit odd, but we did see a few cats. Honestly a alley or two over heading up the stairs toward the temple, I saw more cats. Either way, I was here in the evening and everything looked closed so I did not go inside anywhere. I found the highlight to be the owl starring out the window from one of the shops, that was neat! Overall, Cat Alley was just alright for me. We love the cats, but the area is a bit run down.

It is so amazing when you take a walk along many hidden alleys on the slope. You can explore around to find many beautiful bungalows in Japanese style. If you want to take a rest, an artistic cafe is available for you for relaxing. Sometimes, you will be so lucky if you discover that some cats may look at you with staring eyes. Have fun!
