Located half way along Senkoji mountain and not far from the cable car station. The temple was established around 806. The temple offers a panoramic view of Onomichi port and the Seto Inland sea. A must visit when you're in Onomichi.

Although it is a "mountain", the road up the mountain is not long and the walk is very easy. Personally, I suggest you go up the mountain first and walk slowly along the way until you reach the top of the mountain. The scenery on the mountain is very good. There is also an observation deck specially built so that more people can enjoy the scenery. The observation deck on the mountain can capture the scenery. After you have seen enough, there is a small shop nearby where you can buy some snacks or have an ice cream. After you have had enough rest, you can quickly take the cable car down the mountain to end the journey.

I went here in both the summer and the spring. Spring is by far the nicer time to visit with the cherry blossoms in bloom. In the summer it can be quite hot so I would recommend the rope-way because the climb is quite steep. Its a great place to look around and the view is quite nice.
For those that use the Shinkansen, the park is near Onomichi station and not Shin-Onomichi station. Its about 2 miles (4 km) from the shinkansen. So you will need to take a taxi to get to the park from the Shinkansen. The easiest solution is to get off the Shinkansen in Mihara and change trains to the local train that goes to Onomichi station.

I think this is the most crowded temple in Onomichi, Everyone takes the ropecar up and walks down the hill.Nevertheless, the view worth all the efforts. Especially on sunny days, you can see the small islets in 瀨戶內海.

Loved the vibe of the place. There was also a small cafeteria within the temple complex which is a good place to unwind.

Onomichi is a small gem in the fukuyama region. We choose to base ourselves in Fukuyama and visited onomichi and tomonoura. There are more than 30 temples in the onomichi region. Senkoji is located on the mountain top. It can be access by foot (take temple route) which is approximately 1-2hrs where we pass by all the various temples n sights along the way up. Alternatively, you can take a cable car ride up. I would recommend walking up as the various sights and views are amazing.

The view from Senkoji Park over the Inland Sea was pretty good, even though it was a bit misty and wet the day I visited. I didn't look at the park too much, due to the rain, but did move away from the area at the top of the ropeway a bit. There was another good viewpoint a short way downhill on the other side, which faced a different direction.
Then I walked downhill through Senkoji temple. The paths went through various rock formations and then through an area with a whole lot of cute little religious statues. There are some good views also while walking through the temple. Due to the rain, I didn't spend as long here as I would have liked.

The temple is the simble of Onomichi and everybody not oly tourist visit the temple oftenly where is faous for its power removes people's tiredness in mind, burdens and sorrows.
and the sight from the temple is amazingly beautiful commands historical sights and Seto sea from the top of the mountain.
I recomend that to get on the lift when you climb up the mountain, and better to go down by the stairs as you can see charimng points every around the corner.

any restaurants around? any recommendations? nothing fancy please
Written March 30, 2018
Down the hill in the town's main shopping street, there are several restaurants. Just a bit further, by the sea on the other side of the station is a converted warehouse called Onomichi U2 which includes a restaurant.
