Bufffff. If you are driving from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, you experience some stunning landscapes in less than 3 hours. First, Christchurch and Ashburton's outskirts. Once you take the RD 79 to Geraldine, more rural landscape. Then, after Fairlie, you take the RD8 and a magnificent road scenery, through Burke Pass and after it, 10-15 km of a huge and vast plain. You look at the map and know we are very close to Lake Tekapo, but nothing is visible, yet. And finally, after some small road bends, a clear and stunning turquoise blue color appears in front of you. It's Lake Tekapo. Amazing. Nothing more to say. Unforgettable memory

    Cobalt blue lake
Jaw dropping beauty. A cobalt blue lake sitting like a bowl amidst pine covered slopes, some snow laden. There is a pedestrian bridge to cross over to the Church of Good Shepherd on the other side, a historic site. There are water sports activities and plenty of recreational activities for kids as well. This us a must see place in New Zealand.

    Lake tekapo
Lake tekapo is an amazing place to go with family, friends or by your selvf. If you go I would recomend staying in the YHA Hostel, it's a very affordable place and it's one of the best hostels I have stayed in. The hostel is right bt the church with is a must see if you are by the lake. The church is small and you won't use much time there but it's the most amazing place to take beautiful pictures of the lake and mountains in the background. If you have the time go on the MT John trak. It's a 3 hour track from the city but you can also drive to the top or drive some of the way and take the 1,5 hour trak, do try to do it when the weather is nice. You will get a spectacular view of the lake from the top. The route is medium in difficulty, and a good tip is to do it clock vise if you want to get the hard part over first.

    Lupins? What lupins?
We left Aoraki/Mt Cook resort after two pleasurable days and drove past the pristine blue Pukaki, stopping only to look back wistfully towards the snow-covered mountain. A sharp left turn took us onto the Tekapo road, and the terrain changed quickly back to the more familiar, rounded, rolling countryside that characterises much of New Zealand. We had left the mountains of the Alps behind, and as we approached Tekapo, we descended to the lake shores to explore the ubiquitous area around the Church of the Good Shepherd. We were a little late for the annual lupins, often seen in marketing photos of the area, as they are regarded as a bit of a pest having been sown some years ago by some old lady, with a handful of scattered seed, or so the story goes. The church was locked, and there was little evidence of worship, but there is a dirty window on one end you can peer through to see the simple interior. Nevertheless, the broad shoreline, with its pebble monuments, thrown up by many visitors, contrast against the majesty of the lake, nestling in the surrounding high hills and ridges. Top stop.

Nice spot to relax and check out the views
Lake Tekapo is where the Church of Good Shepherd and the sheep dog monument are located. The grocery store was huge, selling plenty of takeaway foods like sushi, wraps & bentos. They even sold spam for $9.75 nzd. The coffee stand in the store was very popular and always had a line of customers. There is a great play ground for the kids to check out as well as a museum.

    Amazing View
Amazing view. Feels like want to stay there forever!!! We stay at Fairlie and drive to Lake Tekapo. It takes around 30 minutes driving. At night at Lake Tekapo we can see a superb view of Stars Gazing. Very very amazing view that could not find at other place. Overall we are very satisfied our visit there. If got chances, we surely want to repeat it again and again!

    Lake Tekapo beautiful but touristy
Lake Tekapo is beautiful and the Church of the Good Shepherd is worth a photo. There are lupins everywhere in bloom in spring. But this is very much a tourist destination and Lake Pukaki is every bit as beautiful without the souvenir shops.

    Unimaginable Beauty
One of the most wonderful views ever. The Church of the Good Shepard is amazing and looking at it from the front with the lake in the background touches your soul. A perfect stop to break up the drive from Christchurch to Wanaka.

    Beautiful views
Lake Tekapo, a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters that creates the most beautiful backdrop for photos. Nice and peaceful, plenty of parking, and a nice park for our wee boy to walk around and enjoy the views. A must stop spot for photo lovers, or lovers of beautiful waters. The Church is gorgeous too.

    Lovely Stay in December
Gorgeous. Well worth a night if you have the time in your itinerary. We spent a night in early December and enjoyed the lupin flowers. I would recommend going early or later in the day to get less crowds at the area by the church. Further away from the church was less crowded and also lovely. To enjoy the incredible blue waters. We enjoyed our night in Tekapo. Really enjoyed ice cream from the food cart Serendipity. And I appreciated that it broke up the drive between Mount Cook and Christchurch.

The lake itself is spectacular but there isn't much offered on it. We had a long chat to a longtime local who says it's dangerous as it's deep, very cold & unpredictable. There is very little decent accommodation, which, apart from the camp site is set well back from the lake. The entire area currently resembles a construction zone with limited access to the lake.
We did enjoy our visit to the Springs & opted not to stargaze due to the lateness of the available session. We did enjoy a drink & excellent take out meal from The Blue Lake.
All in all I'd have loved this place if it was still a sleepy backwater at reasonable prices. Unfortunately the prices are way ahead of the development. Maybe Camp or give it a couple of years. At the moment it is an overpriced mess

Truly natural scenery of mountains and water, clouds and days of lingering, Everything is touched by the sun creating bright colors, such as poetry and painting, If there is no defect, it must be God-made. "it should be said that it is purely natural.
If the beauty of Lake Rutaniwa is like that of a shy teenage girl in her late teens, the beauty of Lake Tekapo is like that of a man who looks with eyes. The sun, the clouds, the wind, the lake color and shape are not the same. In a minute, it can show you sixty different angels and or demons. When i saw Lake Tekapo, i was convinced that love at first sight, hate at first sight, forget to return, and dream, were all true.
Best be persistent, let us see the rare scenery, wandering in the flowers, happiness like flowers . . .

Beautiful lake in the Mackenzie Basin with 9,000 foot mountains as a backdrop.
Stayed at Ranginui Bed & and Breakfast. Proprietor Ann-Maree was a great host and fixed an excellent breakfast. Modern and comfortable rooms. Fishing guide Samuel English of nearby Twizel, took me on the most successful fishing trip of my life—10 rainbow trout landed ranging from 2.5 to a 6.5 pound lunker. And, this was just a half-day trip. He wanted me to continue fishing but I cried uncle! Tekapo is worth a 2-night stop. Great dark sky stargazing as well.

Very disappointing, avoid if you can - big change since my last visit. You’ll find a pretty lake spoiled by a town comprised of busloads of tourists, overpriced restaurants serving average food with poor service, overpriced accommodation, tat shops, and forget the church because it’s crammed full of crowds with selfie sticks. Plenty of other gorgeous towns elsewhere to spend your time.

Beautiful lake at day, silence and serenity at night! Tekapo is definitely the best place for a romantic getaway for couples.

We visited on a clear and moonless night, which makes stargazing fantastic! There are some stargazing tours available. They can be a bit pricey but it depends on how keen you are to learn more about the stars out there. We recommend the Tekapo Springs Stargazing tour which includes relaxing exclusively in their hot pools at night.

Apart from stargazing tours & the hot springs, there are hardly any water or outdoor activities/tours available. There are some (not a lot) of good restaurants and cafes. There is a supermarket available if cooking is your preference.

Tekapo is a super laid back place for those who enjoy relaxing and doing absolutely nothing.

Well known for the view of its variety colors of lupines and turquoise color lake, Lake Tekapo is one of the photo-worthy spot in Canterbury region, which about 3 hours drive from Christchurch. Been there twice, the lupines already sunken second time we arrived since the water level increased due to heavy rain that time. Please park your car properly as there is car park at the left side of the road from Christchurch.

We stayed the night in Tekapo and viewed the surrounding mountains and lake in the different light of different times of the day. The scene and mood varies a lot. A great high vantage point was on the hill of the Cairns golf course.

We drove down from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo. She was so beautiful as you first saw it along the road, huge, with turquoise color, it was the color of nature. You could see the Mt. Cook at distance with snow capped. The foggy and the surrounding made it a wonder land not belonged to earth. As we stopped, we tended to stay forever. Finally, we reached our destination which was the other side of the lake, with the tidal movement, one could hardly believe it was a lake. Small chapal and the statue of the famous dog making this area a hot spot for tourists. At night, the starry sky comes out in light, you could spend a whole day by enjoying these lovely scenes in Lake Tekapo.

Second time to visit this lake and it still brings out the same reaction...so in awe of its beauty! The church area has improved and heaps of development in the area too. Too bad we can't take photos from inside the church now.

Photos include one of the lake on a cloudy day from one of the few lookouts.

Stopped here for a break in drive from Timaru to Wanaka, and it was so worth it. Coming into Lake tekapo is a beautiful instaworthy field of lupens, then after this you will be awestruck by the beauty of the view once you reach Lake Tekapo. There are great facilities at the lake to stop for food and drinks. Cafe in the “Dark Sky Project” served excellent coffee, and has great seating by huge glasss windows that look out onto the lake. Also a great playground for kids with an outstanding flying fox. This was a great stop and one that well surpassed expectations.
