Kayaking to Monkey Island was such a memorable and unique experience. I would recommend booking this excursion towards the beginning of your trip as it heavily depends on weather/water conditions. Keishya cancelled our original booking date due to weather and had to reschedule for the following day, requiring us to make adjustments to our itinerary.

The kayaking itself is beginner friendly and not too strenuous to get to the island. The monkeys are definitely a highlight as they are very visible, active, and amusing to watch. Keishya took us to two different vantage points so as to let the group see hundreds of monkeys by the end. She was very flexible with allowing us time to observe the monkeys and let the group dictate when we wanted to leave the island. She was nice enough to take photos of us with the island and the kayaks.

The only part of the trip we weren’t as fond of was Keishya’s level of involvement throughout the experience. While we appreciated her knowledge/expertise in both monkey facts and kayak technique, she is very forthright in sharing her thoughts. Though some may appreciate a higher level of involvement, we were hoping for more autonomy in ways such as getting into the kayak (we repeatedly told her we could enter the kayak on our own but she insisted on steadying it for us) or searching for the monkeys on own (she would consistently point them out and double check we saw the exact one she was pointing to). Likewise, we were grateful for her thoroughness for instructing us on things like the direction to hold the paddle, movement of paddling, upper body positioning, etc. However, we did feel it was a little overkill for a group of 6 adults (majority sharing they have previous experience kayaking) to be talked to in that particular manner. To be fair, she did give us some space to kayak at our leisure on the way back (which was appreciated) but she is definitely more hands on overall.

Thank you Samantha for sharing your honest thoughts on my instructions and level of active involvement as a guide. This is actually one of the first times I have been informed of this and I will certainly take your words and experience into consideration. It is sometimes difficult to gauge how much is helping and as in your case clearly, you felt it was overbearing. My sincere apologies if you felt the experience did not give you room to spread your wings. As a guide I try to do my best but clearly sometimes I read people wrong as your feedback expressed.

This trip was outstanding. My wife and I took our 9 and 12 year old girls. Even though the seas were a bit choppy after an overnight storm, the kayaking was completely doable. Keisha, the owner and guide, was impeccably prepared and very safety-oriented. We saw hundreds of monkeys from close to shore - babies, juveniles and adults of both sexes. They were swinging in trees, climbing on rocks and wading in the ocean. It was an outstanding experience all around!

It was my pleasure to be the guide for you and your family. You all did great with the kayaking even in the slightly windy conditions. Thank you for choosing this as part of your Puerto Rico exploration. So glad you enjoyed!

Amazing experience. Kieysha was very helpful, informative, patient and thoughful. She is a fount of knowledge for all your questionzls. She asked for everyones level of comfort and adjusted her helping hand accordingly. The kayaking is moderately difficult, it is not a placid lake, but it is easily doable. The monkeys were really cute to observe and there is plenty of tirm given by kieysha. She helpfully points out interesting things you might have missed.
She is also knowledgeable of the surrounding area so ask her for tips on places to see or eat before you leave.
Highly recommended.

We had the most remarkable kayaking experience with our guide Keishya, on the Barefoot Travelers Kayak Monkey Island Tour. It was a wonderfully organized trip. Our booking was easy, the pre-trip information thorough, and safety was always paramount.

This small private ecotour, on the beautiful waters of Cayo Santiago on Puerto Rico’s east coast, was certainly memorable! Kayaking the calm, crystal clear ocean provided us with an appreciation of the natural beauty of the area. Colorful starfish and graceful rays were spotted as we leisurely paddled towards Monkey Island. While visitors can’t step foot on the island, the highlight was watching the monkeys frolicking up and down the hillside and swinging from the trees while being provided with the interesting history of the island. This tour surpassed my expectations and I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the incredible bio-diversity of Puerto Rico.

This kayak tour is a must do when visiting Puerto Rico, especially if you're an animal lover. Keishya is a wonderful host with a wealth of knowledge about the monkeys and the island. We were lucky to see hundreds of monkeys and she never rushed us to move on to the next stopping point. It was really cool to learn about it all. She also made everyone feel comfortable about kayaking and was a great instructor, especially on a day where the water wasn't very calm. If you are reading this review go book your tour now!

The Kayak tour to Monkey Island was awesome! My wife, a beginner, and I kayaked over beautiful clear water for about 30 minutes to reach Monkey Island. There we relaxed and watched many groups of monkeys come down out of the wooded areas to the beach areas. You could see mother's with their babies and you could see juvenile monkeys chasing or fighting each other. We went to another part of the island and we saw monkeys jumping from tree to tree, it was incredible. Keishya was a fabulous guide. She was very helpful to my wife. Keishya also pointed out starfish and other sealife we kayaked over. We had an all around great time.

Wow, the monkey island tour that Keishya took me and my two friends was absolutely spectacular! She got the kayaks and all the equipment ready for us, gave a short safety talk, and led us around the island! During the tour, she gave us so much knowledge about the history of the island, as well as the devastating environmental impacts that Hurricane Maria brought to this island. The weather was beautiful, and we took our time paddling to and around the land so we could get the best pictures. There was so much to learn about these monkeys and how they were brought up, I will never forget it. Keishya was informative, as well as completely safe and cautious throughout the entire tour. The kayaking itself would be suitable for most levels, as the water was not very choppy, and it was a quick paddle to the island. This was definitely one of the best and most unique tours I have been on, and would love to go again!

Keishya was our guide for the kayak trip to Cayo Santiago. She was an excellent guide. An expert kayaker who was fun, friendly and knowledgeable. The kayaking itself was really beautiful including many sea stars visible through the clear water. We also saw a leatherback turtle. The kayaking was not challenging, a little work out but really pleasant. Then we saw TONS of monkeys! Little ones, big ones!!! It was amazing. Great trip!!! Don’t miss this opportunity!!!

The Monkey Island tour was an AMAZING day from start to finish thanks to Keishya owner of Barefoot Travelers. Keishya’s safety briefing and instructions were second to none! Life jackets were provided and Keishya informed us of what to bring before our tour (water shoes, hats with chin strap, waterproof phone bags if needed, etc.) which was very helpful to know ahead of time. The kayaks and equipment were clean and well maintained. The beautiful water and exercise benefits were an added bonus to what is a once in a lifetime experience. My family kayaked with Keishya out to Monkey Island where we viewed monkeys in their natural environment and learned facts and history about this sacred island. Keishya’s knowledge of the species, environment and the effects that hurricane Maria had on the island were vast and fascinating. The kayak tour around the island allowed us to view multiple starfish, small fish and behaviors of the monkeys. It was quite a site! My fears of the ocean and having never kayaked in my life are gone and I can’t wait to do it again! So much in fact, that I walked away wanting to purchase kayaks for my family and I. That’s how motivating and inspirational this adventure was. Thank you to Keishya for being a wonderful guide / leader / educator and accommodating to our travel schedule. We can’t say thanks enough for this incredible adventure.

I discovered this tour by accident because I was coming to Humacao for something else, and I am so glad I did! This is one of the best things we have done on our Puerto Rico trip. The kayaking was super fun, and there were TONS of monkeys on the island, as well as some huge iguanas! We got to watch them fighting, playing, jumping in the water, etc. It was fascinating. Keishya is a fantastic guide who takes the time to explain everything fully and make sure that everyone is safe and having a good time. I can't recommend this enough, just do it!
