About
We are Open May - September, 2pm - 5pm, Tuesday till Friday (also Bank Holiday Sundays and Mondays). This romantic Gothic house is the lived in family home of the famous Gillow furniture making dynasty. Boasting unique, priceless pieces of Gillow furniture, Leighton's informal guided tours appeal to all ages. Outside the Hall are woodland walks, an abundant 19th century walled garden, herbaceous borders and roses, a fragrant herb patch and an ornamental vegetable plot. Every day at 3.30 pm (weather permitting), Falconer Jim Brown, gives flying displays with his birds of prey, where visitors get the chance to put on a glove and really get up close to these fantastic creatures. For 2015 we have installed a new petite children's play area. Our products have been sourced locally as we worked with a local playground company to maximize the space we had available. So we hope the children will enjoy these facilities. Please go to our website or Facebook page for entrance fees, or just give us a call.

We booked to have our wedding at the beautiful Leighton hall for June 2020. COVID put a stop to that. We rearranged for 10th October and 2 weeks before we were due to get married further restrictions were put in place. This put a stop to our reception where we planned to have a big garden party in our garden. We went up to Leighton Hall to talk things through with Lucy. She rescued the day by suggesting we have the marriage and reception there. She explained that we would have the place to ourselves and we were dubious as the place is stunning. She recommended new fields caterers to provide our food and a service and they were exceptional. The food was delicious and the table service for drinks could not be faulted they worked so hard. We also used David Millington as a photographer and again he was exceptional and so professional but made us both feel at ease. Lucy was always on the end of the phone to talk through issues and was extremely understanding in the difficult times. We had our wedding and yes our guests had to wear masks during the ceremony but afterwards at the reception it was a lot more relaxed. We were left to ourselves and had the run of the house just as promised and it was brilliant. I could not think of a better place to get married and the place is just beautiful. On first visiting I was sceptical that we could afford it due to its stunning setting but the family are extremely competitively priced and we managed to have our dream wedding there. If you are thinking of getting married please go and visit here and speak to Lucy and you will struggle not to fall in love with it. With Lucy and Mrs Reynolds you have superb, caring generous hosts who will help organise everything and leave you to your day stress free and to just enjoy it without any worries. Due to the restrictions we only had 15 at the wedding. We were disappointed in this as it was a big downsize however after having the wedding it turned out to be perfect. Very intimate could spend quality time with everyone who was there and venue hosted us perfectly. Definitely put this on your list to visit and have a wonderful dream day like we were lucky enough to achieve.

Wow - thanks for the amazing review! The Leighton team were just so pleased that we could help you achieve a special wedding day during such a crazy time. It was a pleasure to have you and your close family, including the children, at Leighton. We are glad we have helped you to create special memories. Thanks for giving confidence to other couples that you day can be brilliant with less people. I hope that you will have a bigger party in the future when the Government relax legislation and get to wear your beautiful dress again. Take care and we hope to see you at Leighton again soon. Lucy

Today is my 50th birthday and my husband treated me to a private tour, afternoon tea and birds of prey display for 24 of my nearest and dearest at Leighton Hall. I knew it would be something different and special when we turned the corner past the gate lodge and marvelled at the stunning view of the hall sat in a rolling valley amidst the Lakeland mountains.

It could not have been better and we could not have been made to feel more welcome.

On arrival, Susie, the owner introduced herself and made sure everyone stayed dry by inviting us to wait in the music room/entrance hall until everyone arrived. My 97 year old grandmother also came along and Susie ensured she was well catered for and advised us on navigating the property in her wheelchair.

The tour of the hall was fascinating with lots of interesting stories that only an owner would know about, particularly in terms of the origins of furniture and artefacts etc. Susie was interesting, friendly and knowledgable and really brought the tour to life. In the music room, Susie allowed a family member to play 'Happy Birthday' on the piano. Throughout the hall were many vases of flowers, especially Sweet Peas which smelled and looked gorgeous.

We then went to have our afternoon tea which was set out beautifully and equally tasty. We were a fussy bunch to cater for....x4 vegans, and one gluten free order(which we only found out about on the day) but nothing was too much trouble.

The bird of prey display was excellent and the bird handler was engaging to listen to and the birds were stunning....so much so that we all stayed out to watch and listen despite the rain and our inadequate clothing. The gardens are also beautiful and well worth a wander.

Communication throughout the booking process and run up to the event was impeccable and staff were flexible in allowing us to return to the tea room after the bird of prey display to open gifts and have birthday cake.

We will most certainly return to this special property when in the area.

Currently Leighton Hall is only open on Thursday and Sunday afternoons from 2-5pm so we considered ourselves lucky to be able to book a place and pay over the phone.
The welcome was friendly. The gardens are looked after well even in these strange times and there is still much to see in the borders and orchard. We had afternoon tea outside in the sunshine then went to see the Birds of Prey display. Our tour of the Hall, which is the home of the Gillow family of the famous firm of Waring and Gillow, furniture makers, lasted three quarters of an hour and the guide did her best to give us a good tour in spite of the restrictions. Normally you can sit on the chairs here but not now. It would be a lovely place for a celebration like a wedding. We had a lovely afternoon out and were pleased we didn't miss Leighton.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. It is always great to have such positive feedback and I will be sure to pass it to the team. This summer had many challenges and at one stage we were very concerned about opening at all. We are very pleased that we did as it had such lovely people come and explore, and support this local heritage. Everyone is welcome at Leighton Hall. Do come back and see us soon. We have limited Christmas activities, one being Wreath Making if you fancy it, but hopefully a lot more activities next year - fingers crossed. If we don't see you before - Have a very nice Christmas and New Year.

I have just had a wonderful afternoon here with my 9 year old son. We started with a tour of the beautiful hall led by the current owner, Mrs Reynolds. It was very light hearted and informative and there was a real homely feel - it did not feel at all stuffy and all the guests were made to feel very welcome, including the children. We then moved on to a brilliant bird of prey display where the birds flew very close to the audience which was great. We had a walk/play around the beautiful garden and maze and finished off with a lovely cup of tea and cake in the tea room.

I really recommend this place for a relaxing afternoon out. I enjoyed it as did my son - it was very child friendly where they were invited to touch various bits, sit down wherever, play on the grass and generally have fun (it's not a look but don't touch sort of place). It is in a truly stunning location too.

Thank you so much to all the team.

We visited for a hall tour in early September 2020. We were greeted by one of the ladies who lives in the house which was a lovely touch. The tour covers the history of the house and the family who still live there. It has some stunning pieces of furniture. The dining room and the sitting room were particular favourites in that regard. We also visited some of the woodland and gardens along with the caterpillar maze. We were also lucky enough to see the bird of prey display with a barn owl, Harris hawk and falcon. We were there for about 2 to 2.5 hours on total and felt very welcome. We even had time to have coffee and cake in the garden which was lovely. Everything was also very covid secure. Thanks to all for a lovely afternoon.

Pam gave us an excellent guided tour of some of the rooms on the ground floor. She was very knowable and made the tour interesting, especially opening 2 of the cabinets so we could see inside. Lovely gardens. We then watched birds of prey being flown with another very interesting commentary.. An excellent afternoon visit.

This was my second visit to Leighton hall the first in 2019 and despite the restrictions due to the virus the hall is still enchanting as ever. The gardens are beautiful and I could see that a lot of work had taken place since my last visit. The owner is a lovely guide and she loves the hall you can tell. There is a lovely homely tea room with nice cakes and scones. All the staff safe very helpful and nothing too much trouble and ready to answer your questions. This was my friends first visit and I hope we can return when we can go upstairs. Please visit you won't regret it.

We had a brilliant experience here from the moment we were greeted by one of the owners Suzie, always a nice touch, who pointed us to the simply beautiful gardens and the tea room which was great...we ate outside on the lawn, which was lovely. The house, latterly owned by Gillows of Lancaster furniture fame, was fascinating with lots of its history and that of the families who lived here explained to us on our tour. You wouldn't find a more splendid but friendly room than the drawing room which has amazing views over the garden to the start of the Lakes. I loved it. And, as a bonus, there was a free wild bird display. I have seen a few of these but this was by far the best. The lady keeper of the birds was both informative and great fun, and it was quite exciting that she allowed the birds to fly and settle amongst us. The countryside around is wonderful to drive through. All in all an exceptional experience. I can't wait to go back. Everything was 5 star.

Activities for children were vey good. Our grandson enjoyed the activities provided for a walk in the woods. The bird of prey show was the best we have ever seen. It was very educational and a great spectacle. The walks in the area beyond the house and gardens are also beautiful. We also enjoyed the house tour. The staff were very friendly.
