An island in the River Great Ouse on the edge of St Ives, once a hive of activity growing willow for basket making and shipping it down the river to market. Now, maintained by volunteers, it is a haven for wildlife with a boardwalk round...More

A pleasant spot by the river in St Ives, Holt Island used to be a commercial willow growing planting. Now the island is a sanctuary for wildlife with the willows and reeds providing a home for birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There is a boardwalk around...More

The nature reserve can be most easily accessed from the main part of the town via the churchyard of All Saints. It is a superb little reserve and has well formed paths on boardwalks. At the time of visiting there was no one else there...More

We picked a Sunday morning for our first visit here, which was perhaps a mistake as the church bells were ringing noisily as we crossed the bridge. It also appeared to be a maintenance day, so there were a number of volunteers busy with hammers...More

Run by a team of knowledgeable and dedicated people encouraging everyone to learn and participate in the work they do there. Love the 'Adopt a Nest Box' scheme and the Holt Island Honey is delicious.

This has a pathway through on a mixture of boardwalk and grass paths. There are lots of boards telling you what to look out for whether it is mammals, birds, butterflies, flowers or water-life. A calm oasis with some seats to enjoy the peacefulness.

Not open all of the time but worth organizing a trip for the sheer peace & quiet!A boardwalk enables one to walk round the island where you can see almost all of Cambs wildlife at one time or another.
