The Ribeira Sacra is one of Europe’s natural wonders, where the rivers Mino and Sil have created landscapes of astonishing beauty filling the base of a prehistoric earthquake fissure. We saw this perfectly from this viewing platform, the river carving between steep rock hillsides. A...More

We happened upon this site almost by accident as the Information Office at the Balcones de Madrid was closed when we got there. This is the site with the platform extending off the side of the ridge. The view of the gorge of the River...More

We saw some of the most beautiful scenery ever on oy boat trip, mountains and vineyards on the slopes which makes you wonder how they are harvested.

El Cañon del Sil or also called La Ribeira Sacra, named after the number of monasteries in this area, is the most visited in the interior of rural Galicia. The River Sil is the river that separates the two provinces of Lugo and Orense. A...More

While the canyon was interesting, I would not call it spectacular. Its also quite a long drive from the nearest major town.

The Sil River runs between mountain cliffs and provides a gorgeous landscape worth the trouble to visit. In the spring and summer there is a 2-hour boat trip down the river but unfortunately when I visited (winter) the boats were not running, so we hired...More

Superb views of the Sil Canyon from several viewing points on the way to Parada De Sil. The views are worth the long winding drive up and down the narrow roads of several peaks. The way to these points is not very well signposted and...More

Hi! If you are not planning to hike, you can stay in Ourense, rent a car, and drive up to see the Parador of Santo Estevo, and I believe you can get a boat there, that will take you down the river. If money is no problem... More

Ribeira Sacra - best route? (3 Replies)
We'll be visiting Galicia next year in May and have about 1 day to spend in the area of Ribeira Sacra. However it seems like there are many routes that can be taken, and given the fact that we only have 1 day we'd like to know which is the best we could take (nicest scenery, monasteries, wineries, etc). One thing I would like to do for sure is take the catamaran ride in the Canon del Sil. And finally would appreciate if could recommend a nice Rural House to spend the night. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your response, Ian and Irene. The Turgalicia site has so much info, the guides are particularly good - now we need to read it and digest it all. You mentioned that May 17-20 is a holiday - do you know if the catamaran rides will be on during those days?
