My first Levada in the island. I did by myself and it was pretty amazing and it is not hard as some others. A good app to download is Walkme, it has all infos that you need to do any Levada in the Island (maps, pics, buses scheduled, etc). Follow me on IG: @dddferraz

However, here is how you shouldn't approach it ; -)
Me and my girlfriend started at Lamaceiros at noon. Weather was nice and in the first three hours we passed some tremendous lookouts, waterfalls and laurel trees. The tunnels by then had been narrow and streaked with puddles – more or less. Anyways, none of them required much effort or more than five minutes of walking. At some point, we reached a tunnel we could barely look through. As I learned later this was the one with a remarkable length of sheer 1,5 km. It would seem the thing to turn back here, or – for the ones who love the tunnels – to pass it and go back through right after. On our way through the tunnel we helped ourselves with phone flashlights
and got little wet passing the waterfalls in the middle.
We went on, lead by the false assumption there would come a junction for the road soon. Also, we weren't eager to go back for it had been quite a walk till there and getting darker. Few short tunnels followed, with the very last of them being extraordinarily muddy. The way became worse evermore, eventually – after five hours of walking –leaving us surprised at its southern deadlock.
After a brief discussion we figured it would be unreasonable to proceed walking up the brook there. Going back the same way daylight was about to fade. We increased our paces, running wherever possible. Passing the tunnels this time we didn't give a monkeys about dirty shoes. Our phones batteries had run low and we wanted to save it for the remaining tunnels. We were grateful for each wire fence to cling to so that we could walk on quicker (the Levada runs along the scarp). Luckily the full moon had risen soon to lighten the way and we were looking forward to each obstacle to come.
Certainly, our thrill to hike was just as big as our naivety.
In any case, you'd be better off with torches and waterproof clothes.

Mostly flat trail following a levada, this trail has beautiful views and a unique twist of a few old dark tunnels to hike through. A headlamp or the light of a cell phone required to get through the tunnels. A waterfall or two along the way and lots of flowers.

This is an easy walk with no climbing in it. You walk trough the forest and at the beginning you have some lovely flowers. Further we thought it was a bit boring... There was no waterfall (August) and the second tunnel was closed because of construction.
You walk the same way twice.

we did this little walk and found it very pleasant. You will need strong shoes for this walk, so no flip flops

This is our favourite walk in Madeira. It's easy and flat (tho it does get a little precipitous in places) - worth the effort because of the absolutely stunning views. We do this particular walk whenever we come to Madeira.

Not that easy to find as you should not go to the town named Ribiera de Janela to get there, but instead, the oppoiste way to Laceimeros up the hill from Porto Montiz, cross the village until you reach the final car park after the church. a 3-4 hours walk, easy, flat along the levada until you reach the tunnel (take a lamp).

We walked the first 6 km. Started at around 9:30 am. We were the only couple on the trail for almost two hours. Nice views. The first part is easy to walk. The last part of the 6 km is more difficult. Just before the waterfall there is a tunnel for which you will need a light. In the tunnel your feet may get wet. In August the waterfall did not show much water

If you're looking for lush forests, impressive waterfalls and dingy tunnels then this walk is for you!
Recommendations:
1. Wear walking shoes, the more waterproof the better
2. Bring a torch, ideally one torch per person and even more ideally a head torch to leave your hands free to help you balance...
3. Be prepared to do a bit of balancing on the levada wall in the tunnels to avoid getting wet feet (either in the levada or the puddles alongside)
4. Our sat nav (google maps) tried to take us up a dodgy road (the caminho da ladeira) in Porto Moniz to the start of the walk. Our hire car ceouldn't do it, even in first gear! I would strongly recommend staying on the ER101 as long as possible before taking the road across to Lamaceiros
5. There are toilets, parking and picnic benches at the start of the walk in Lamaceiros
6. There's a hut halfway along which is a good place to stop for sandwiches. We continued past this through a couple of further tunnels before getting to a part of the levada which was overflowing where we turned back.
7. There's no public transport to the start of the walk so a hire car or tour is the best bet (otherwise you have to walk up from Porto Moniz which would be quite a trek)

We just went until the waterfall which is after the tunnel. Bring a flashlight. We had the flash from our phone which was ok but a flashlight is usefull. The waterfall is quite impressive. The hike is an easy one.
