Truly worth the drive. Old town with lots of history unfortunately we where on a very tight schedule and could not visit all the sites, be it church, museum, theatre etc etc. We walked around the small alleys for less than 30 minutes took s few pictures and drove away. Truly recommend the experience for a few hours at least.

PITIGLIANO Is a breathtaking town carved into the Tufo rock. Perched on a cliff of local stone, the town stands majestically as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Also known as Little Jerusalem, thanks to the large Jewish community it hosted within its walls in the 16th century. A Great Day to see this Awesome Village!

We drove here and it's kind of out of the way. It's a unique place and we are glad we came. However, prior to arriving to this town, there wasn't much around... toilets, etc. And then when we arrived (Around 3:30 pm) a lot of places were closed. We found a public toilet but only one restaurant was open. Maybe it was low season? (End of October) So plan accordingly.

If you’re after an incredible day trip to a vibrant yet quaint town in Tuscany, Pitigliano is for you. A beautiful place, with a great view of the town itself and surroundings, lots of choice for food and a real Italian feel. Would love to go again.

If you are planning on visit the three famous tuff towns (Sorano, Savan, Pitigliano), this one should be in the top priority with more dedicated time.
Don't just rush through like many do, enjoy the views, take a look into the streets, they have a lot to tell. There are pretty good places to eat around as well.
I would recommend some good spots for photographers with following coordinates:
Historic town side view: 42.63384, 11.6706
Town panorama: 42.63092, 11.66202
Another, less impressive panorama: 42.63068, 11.66426

We took a detour through the eastern part of the Grosetto province in Southern Tuscany, to visit Sorano and Pitigliano en route to Orvieto from Montalcino.
We left our car in metered parking spaces outside the city gate in Pitigliano, and walked after. The view is incredible (we took innumerable pictures), with the horizontal expanse sitting atop a tufa cliff. As you enter through the old gate and pass the aqueduct, it’s a pleasant one hour exploration by foot on a relatively flat surface, with all of three pedestrian thoroughfares and not very much to see. The town is somewhat stark inside and underwhelms after the dramatic perched view, but it has an interesting Jewish ghetto area (we were unable to visit the synagogue as it was closed around lunch time).
Overall, well worth a quick stopover in a relatively non-touristy part of Tuscany.

Get lost on the shadowy winding labyrinth of narrows streets of this beautiful village for at least 1 hour if you plan just a stop-over.

This city and several surrounding smaller towns are located in an area characterised by the "tufo" light brown volcanic rock which is used ubiquitously for all the buildings. The landscape is marked by many sheer, smooth faced cliffs which quite improbably have openings high up which have been created for various purposes including habitation and as dovecotes for homing pigeons which were once used as postmen.
Despite the steepness of the cliffs the old "borgo" of this town, which is entirely pedestrianised once you have passed into the old quarter, has to be accessed by going down a steep staircase which has been cut through solid rock. Once down at this lower level you find yourself in a labyrinth of pathways with houses in most improbable positions and amongst them are a couple of restaurants, one of which has a terrace overlooking the abyss which is the valley below the town.
Back in the old quarter there are two parallel streets running along the ridge of the cliff leading at the far end to an enormous structure which has now been converted into an exhibition space. Walls and railings are in abundance to stop you falling off the edge of the cliff into the valley hundreds of feet below but still you periodically come across a building which has somehow been constructed below these ramparts.
Finally you climb up more steps and find yourself on a flat paved roof which is the highest point of the town and which affords a fabulous view of the surrounding town and countryside.

How is the public transportation in Pitigliano ? We like to travel by bus or train and have done it frequently from Siena, but has anyone experience doing this from Pitigliano ?

Pitigliano itself is all walkable. We visited it twice this Spring and always found a place to park right outside of the historic center. In Google it seems there is some public transport. See: “tuttopitigliano” It’s worth a visit the whole zone but by car would be worth it to get around to the various “Borghi”. If you have other questions just get in touch.
Vorrei visitare Pitigliano domani , dove posso parcheggiare?
Saluti

Vicino al centro, Piazza Petruccioli, percorrendo la Strada Regionale 74 maremmana, lasciandoti alle spalle il centro e uscendo da Pitigliano, lungo la strada trovi dei posteggi e arrivi comodamente a piedi in centro.
