There's nothing here save for this simple, elegant little church that seems ancient and quite holy. It's strangely haunting and in a beautiful spot. Walk a little further down the road past the church and you'll see the "Gladiator' road.

A church has been here since the 7th century but this one dates back to the 12th. It's filled with medieval symbolism including the Regulus snake at the top of one of the capitols. Be sure to read about the church before going so you don't miss any of the interesting things inside including the original baptismal font where Pope Pius II and his nephew, Pius III, were baptized.

You will be overcome by the simple beauty of the church and the classical form both inside and outside.
We attended a wedding there in July and from the first moment so many details caught the eye: the interior including the cross at the high altar, the robustness of the architecture inside leading to the magnificent Romanesque detail around the entrance door.
Don't be put off by the lack of light ; when the lights are turned on the building is seen as superb.
Advice: bring water as it is a serious climb back to the centre of Pienza.; being over a thousand years old the building has no restrooms.

The silence was broken by the soft sounds of water trickling into the small pool, on the right as you come down the narrow road. Bees were drinking and frogs were sunning themselves in the algae green basin. It was tranquil, empty, essentially still. Though constructed in the era after Christ, the edifice--and its attached tower--seems to offer a natural bridge between pre-Christian (pagan) and Christian times. In truth the pieve is not so different from the little church on the outskirts of nearby Castelmuzio, for example, or, for that matter, many other early (pre-Romanesque) structures dotting the Siena province. It just seems to be "that old" and even more so. Take your time. Let your eyes adjust to the low light and, as you do, details will start popping out at you, the decorations at the capitals, the way the light cuts up the space, the presence of symbols of devotion, the marvelous color of the soft stones. Pienza is a perfect Renaissance town, but this place, the original pre-Pio Corsignano, makes you realize just how much more ancient all this is...and yet how powerfully it can speak to us today.

dating back to the 10th century, this little church a bit outside of Pienza is worth the descent and climb back to the city. the tower and the front are very interesting.

This small country church just outside the walls of the beautiful town of Pienza is worth the short walk / detour. It's only a ten minute walk. The setting is nice and there is a gorgeous "Pienza Ring Walk" that takes you out to Villita Chapel and back to Corsignano if you are a hiker. The church was where the future pope, Pius was baptized. It hosts a simple interior and it won't take you long to see it. Its beauty lies in its age (origins date back nearly 1,000 years) and its setting.

Well preserved old church. It was the perfect place to stretch our legs and walk around. The surrounding countryside is beyond compare!

A beautiful church with a well preserved 13th century tower located on the outskirts of the town of Pienza. Step inside for a moment of quiet reflection.

Be brave and go down the steps at the back down into the crypt! We were the only visitors when we went.
