Il Duomo di Pienza is the Renaissance cathedral of this town, which is located in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is in Piazza Pio II, the main Renaissance square of the old town and the full complex: square, cathedral, palaces, town hall and other buildings really are very nice. The facade of the cathedral and the inner side also are very beautiful. Very good place for history and art-lovers.

Like all more or less significant buildings in Penza, the initiative to create the cathedral belongs to Pope Pius II Piccolomini, who was born here. This was not the construction of a single cathedral as usual, but part of the reconstruction of the entire center by architect Bernardo Rossellino. Due to the need to fit the cathedral into the ensemble of Pius II Square, Rossellino was forced to deploy the cathedral along the south-north axis with the facade facing north, and not as usual along the east-west axis. This is how the former Romanesque church, demolished for the construction of the cathedral, was oriented. Although the facade of the cathedral is Renaissance, it still retains Gothic elements (lancet windows, oculus eye). On the pediment, the coat of arms with the emblem of Pius II Piccolomini does not let us forget who initiated the construction. Inside, the cathedral has three naves separated by columns. However, the facade, which is also divided into three parts, has already warned us about this structure. The apse of the cathedral is also three-membered: it is divided into three chapels.

Very beautiful church in the center of Pienza. A must see if you are in the town. After the church head behind it to see some amazing views.

The cathedral sits in the centre of Piazza Pio II and is the main attraction of the square. There are no restaurants or bars surrounding it to distract yourself from it. A nice to see if you are visiting Pienza but that's about it.

A must see when you are in Pienza.
The city was well planned and the Duomo adds to its charm.
The Duomo is in the main square and is the centerpiece of the city.

Don’t usually visit churches but if you are going to this one is worth it, especially the catacombs. It has a fascinating history. It’s basically sinking. They have over the years tried to stop the collapse with a maze of bricked walls.

In the church you can see what happened with the whole of back sinking. It’s impressive and amazing that over the years they tried to repair it. The church itself is also beautiful and isn’t over the top.

The Duomo of Pienza is an amazing piece of history. Visiting the main church is not enough to understand its role in the area, you have to get into the caves of the basement, where the original furniture of the Duomo is shown, together with masterpieces from the monks. The caves drilling down the earth contribute to understand the role of the duomo at that time, and how it was a reference for all inhabitants of the area.

Unfortunately this was under repair and missed the best of the place. It was really cold as the winds were unrelenting during that day. Found the best local hand made leather shop nearby.

I love old churches. Growing up in Bavaria I have been to many churches and this is one of the nicest I have been too. Loved the Frescos and the objects D'art. The building is steeped in history and Frankincense. A must see!

A beautiful little Tuscan town, I found Pienza to be very clean as well as providing a safe atmosphere. A good variety of shops catering to food, wine, fashion and souvenirs. Unfortunately for us, our visit to the Cathedral wasn't a total success due to renovations underway and we couldn't view the altar etc. An interesting little chuch can be found along the walled walk and gives examples of the work of local craftsmen from the 16th century (no Michaelangelo's, but the statues are interesting and without offence intended, highlight the difference between a genius and a tradesman).
I intend to come back and explore further.
