Beautiful

Very beautiful church in the center of Pienza. A must see if you are in the town. After the church head behind it to see some amazing views.

Very beautiful Renaissance cathedral
Aug 2019 • Family
Il Duomo di Pienza is the Renaissance cathedral of this town, which is located in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is in Piazza Pio II, the main Renaissance square of the old town and the full complex: square, cathedral, palaces, town hall and other buildings really are very nice. The facade of the cathedral and the inner side also are very beautiful. Very good place for history and art-lovers.

15th century Renaissance and Gothic Cathedral built for Pope Pius II who was born in Pienza. Not that spectacular.
Jun 2019
Construction of this Cathedral commenced in 1459 and was commissioned by Pope Pius !!, shortly after he became Pope, and was designed by Bernado Rossellino who also designed the surrounding buildings. The Cathedral was built on the ruins of an old Romanesque church and was consecrated by the Pope in 1462.

The Cathedral is a mix of Renaissance and Gothic architectural styles, the latter being attributed to the years that the Pope spent in Germany. The two storey travertine facade is effectively split into three sections with there being a large central portal with two smaller portals either side. The portals are separated by four large pilasters and, above each portal, there are also large arched niches. Both the pilasters and the arched niches extend over both storeys. There are also two rows of small scale columns on either sides of the arches. There is a large rose window high above the main portal. The roof is gabled and there is the Piccolomini (the Pope's Family name) coat of arms on the pediment of the tympanum. The spire of the campanile is pointed.

Internally the design is a Latin cross but there are three large naves of the same height with the central nave only being slightly wider than the two side naves. The naves are separated by large columns that support arches. The ceilings are largely unadorned and are rib vaulted whilst there are numerous large Gothic windows around the walls that let in lots of light and make photography difficult.

There are three chapels in the apse each being adorned with some beautiful altarpieces painted by noted 15th century Sienese artists. The main altar and the baptismal font are also said to have been designed by Rossellino.

Worth a quick look but I did not think that the Cathedral was that spectacular either externally or internally.

Elegant little Duomo
Oct 2019
The things you can do when you're a local boy made good! Pope Pius II was apparently instrumental in the design and building of this little duomo, and indeed of the whole town. It's not a flashy church compared to many others in Tuscany but sites nicely in its little Piazza and with some fine pillars and ceiling decoration it has a certain elegance. If you're strolling around the lovely little village of Pienza you should most surely pay your respect to (Pope) Enea Piccolomini who left a lasting legacy for his home town.

Small church!
Sep 2019
This Duomo used to have very beautiful frescoes, unfortunately they all gone (almost gone). In a few small spots you can see them.

Beautiful arches
Aug 2019
The Pienza Duomo is a relatively simple building from the mid-15th century but what makes it somewhat special are the beautiful arches which soar overhead throughout the interior. Definitely worth at least a quick peek in.

Simple but impressive
Jul 2019 • Friends
Some wonderful frescoes which have suffered over the years. Towering pillars and roof paintings, well worth a quick visit. The towering pillars and painted roof make for an interesting view of the Italian Renaissance. Also very pleasant place to cool down on a hot day!

A comparatively simple cathedral
May 2019 • Couples
Compared to other churches we visited in Italy, this one was nice but not especially impressive, though still worth a visit.

Vanity project
Jun 2019 • Couples
Smaller than most cathedrals but then it was one man's vanity project. There's quite a slope down from back to front due to gradual subsidence.Quite different in style to other Tuscan churches.

Impressive interior
Apr 2019 • Family
We found the interior breathtaking as it was very high and had an almost moorish feel with the pillars.
