The lake of Garda is a popular holiday location, especially for German people, it’s on the edge of Dolomiti .
Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of last ice age.
The northern part of the lake is narrower, surrounded by mountains and often with strong winds so it’s particularly loved by windsurfers.
The south of the lake is very large and calmly, with a wonderful climate all year round

A beautiful place to visit but within 5 hours of us booking into the Garda Hotel, one of the Tonelli group, thieves entered our locked room and stole 500 euros from our locked safe, we know that many other rooms were entered in this way and thousands of euros were stolen. The tour guide was very helpful with the police and crime report, the Hotel promised a lot but did little. It was our first time in Italy and the first time with Cosmos the tour operator and it ruined our holiday. BUT we will return to the Lakes however we will never stay in the hotel again. We sent a letter to Cosmos shortly after we came home and have not had a reply ( Dec) needless to say that we will never use them again. I hope that TripAdvisor publish my review because others need to be aware of this incident.

This visit was our 2nd. We had 5 nights in Salo (previously 10 nights). Salo itself is the most pleasant as a base for an extended visit with its long shore, several swimming spots, many cafes and shopping. Over our 2 visits we have taken the ferry or a bus to other towns on the lake and each has its own special attraction. I find Lake Garda less touristy than Lake Como and equally attractive.

We stayed on Lake Garda for a week and travelled on the boats from Sirmione to the other small towns. We bought the day tickets which meant we could go all over for one price. On one day we went to Limone and came back via Salo where we stopped to wander the streets. The tourist office was very helpful. It was very hot so we took shelter in the cathedral. We wanted to come back to the art exhibition on another day but we ran out of time. Giotto really attracted me though so i regret not going back. We did use the same tariff tickets to go to Riva and Garda the following day. There is so much to see and do. We are coming back for another visit.

We travelled from Venice to Lake Garda by train and bus and then travelled from Lake Garda to Florence by bus and train.
We didn't book any train tickets in advance and as we hadn't travelled by train in Italy before this was the part of our holiday that we weren't 100% sure about. However everything went very smoothly and I would thoroughly recommend the public transport in Italy.
We arrived at the Santa Lucia station in Venice and purchased a ticket to travel to Peschiera Del Garda. This was quite simple as we opted for English, chose our destination, time and then we could pay by cash or credit card. For 2 adults this was 19.30 euros which we thought was excellent value. The train was on time, very clean and we easily found a seat although don't leave boarding the train until the last minute otherwise you might not be so lucky. Once we had arrived at Peschiera Del Garda we then travelled by bus to Bardolino which I think was approx. 5 euros for the 2 of us as we purchased the tickets on the bus. It would have been cheaper if we had purchased the tickets at the station.
While staying in Bardolino we caught the bus to Verona for the day which was very easy to do and we purchased the tickets from the tobacconists as that was cheaper.
When we left Lake Garda we caught the bus to Verona then travelled by train to Florence. Again we used the machine and found the process very easy. We travelled from Verona to Bologna, changed at Bologna then travelled to Florence. The train from Bologna was a very fast train and you had to reserve your seats. Bologna station is very large so if you have to change please allow enough time. The fast train was more expensive, from Verona to Bologna was 18.30 euros for 2 adults. From Bologna to Florence was 48 euros for 2 adults.
We travelled for the day from Florence to Lucca and that was 14.20 euros each way for 2 adults
We then travelled by train from Florence to Pisa which was 15.80 euros for 2 adults.
Compared to the trains in the UK I think the trains in Italy offer great value, were on time, clean and easy to use.

There are different parts of Lake Garda. Salo is one of the best. Some other areas around the lake can get so busy in summer it gets a bit much but Salo is perfect.

Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian Lakes and it takes around three hours and €18 on the FAST ferry boat to get from one end to the other so take a large bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat if you visit in high summer. The jump on jump off option is no longer available so you need to plan your trip with a stop to stop ticket and leave early. I departed from Sirmione, got off in Riva for lunch, then caught the slow ferry to Limone. Riva is at the narrow end and hemmed in by the beginning of the Italian Alps, cliffs rising out of the lake. Look for a tiny church perched halfway up the mountain. In the afternoon winds are funnelled down providing ideal conditions for the small sailers and kite surfers who play dodgem with the ferry. It becomes quite exciting with a few close shaves much hooting on the part of the larger craft and thumbs up from the wind riders. Limone boasts an ancient grove of lemon trees from which it got its name. It's a delightful village perched on a hill and has a pebble beach ...very popular. There are several gelato shops and this is the time for desert before returning on the fast boat ...another €18.
If the grand tour is not to your liking, Garda and Bardilino are around the halfway mark and there is also a local bus service from here to Peschiera de Garda should you not fancy returning by ferry.
A day trip by boat on Lake Garda is a must do.

We were staying at a hotel about 4 miles away and decided to visit the town of Salo. We managed to park on street near the centre but, be warned, the maximum time for parking is typically 1 hour. If you want to stay longer there are car parks on the edge of town.
The lakeside front is lovely for a stroll, lots of cafes and bars. The old streets behind have some delightful shops to browse around. We loved the atmosphere and the architecture.

Buon tour. 👍

Sorry cannot help having not spent Christmas ther. However, we do like Lake garda very much and Salo is a lovely small town, with Gardone nearby. Grand Hotel Gardone is superb!! Vassili tea rooms are a delight in Salo.

We didn't use trains. I don't think there are any on the Salo / Limone side. Top and bottom of the lake have them so look at Desenzano and Riva del Garda.

Hi there, we are hoping to stay at campsite Fornella this coming mid May. Please can you tell me how warm it will be? Also how accessible is the beach to the campsite. Will we need to hire a car to visit Salo, Riva, San Felice and Isola del Garda or are there regular buses to the ferry etc? We do have electric bikes.
Any tips that can be recommended too please.
Many thanks
Anne-Marie
