This inland lighthouse was designed by Henry Aaron Baker (designer of the King’s Inn, Dublin) for the First Earl of Bective in memory of his father Sir Thomas Taylor in 1791.At 30m high, one can see magnificent views of the surrounding countryside as far as the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland on a clear day. The Spire was used to view horse racing and the hunt in the 19th century. The spires stands on the site of an iron age ring fort. The community park (The People’s Park) includes the “Paupers Graveyard”, in which many, many victims of the mid-19th century famine lie buried.

It was a freezing cold day when we visited the Spire. It only opens a couple of times a year and this wasn't one of them! Good views from the top of the hill and the Spire is certainly a fine building and an engineering...More

Worth a visit, playground and park around the tower. The tower is open on certain Sundays, not often.

What's not t like about a 'lighthouse' in the middle of nowhere?! Not that Kells is 'nowhere' I might add! As a child the Spire of Lloyd was always fascinating to me as we drove by on the N3 below it. My parents never quite...More

This monument is approached through a beautiful park on the outskirts of Kells. Get there when it is open and climb the steps to the top where you can view all the surrounding counties.
