This was an absolutely brilliant day out. Started with a ferry crossing from Sami to Ithaki. Our guide was an american lady called Carol. She was very informative and had a wealth of stories. Ithaki is a very pretty Island. Our first stop was the Katharon Monastery. Pretty little church, with a very important icon, Carol told us the story of this. Also a fabulous view of the Bay of Vathy. We made our way through the interior of the Island to Stavros. Then on to Kioni, nice little fishing village and then to Vathy itself. Learnt a lot about the Island and Kind Odysseus. Avery good day out and I would highly recommend it

We booked the island tour in their Katelios office as that is where we were staying. We were picked up first at 08.15 and dropped off last at 19.15 so an 11 hour day. Catherine, from Wales was our tour guide and very informative and funny she was too. First stop is a honey making place, which isn’t mentioned in the tour, got to taste lots of honey and then of course there is the chance to buy said locally made honey. Then off to view Myrtos beach for about 10 minutes, chance to take some photos. Next stop was Assos for about 45 minutes as we spent a long time at the honey place, due to the coach being full. Then off to Fiskardo for lunch for an hour and 20 minutes. You are given a discount card for one of the restaurants on the water front, but we wanted gyros, and they aren’t on the menu, so we went and found a restaurant which did offer gyros. Then off to Melissani lake, arriving late afternoon, so you miss the best time for the sunlight pouring into the lake at midday, still, a nice quick trip with some nice photos. Then onto Drogarati caves with its 172 steps down and of course 172 steps back up, so we gave this a miss, but there is a nice cafe, gift shop and pool which you can use. Then onto a winery to sample lots of wines. All in all a good day, full on with short stops but very enjoyable made so by Catherine.

We booked two tours with Panem, the Ithaca tour and the Island tour. Some of these are supposed to go twice a week, but are numbers dependent which the lady in the office will tell you. So be aware of that when booking as you may find early or late in the season that the trip won't run on the day you want it to. Both tours we had a lovely Welsh guide called Catherine who was good humoured and well informed. The Ithaca Tour I would say is a long day (7am start, 6pm finish) most of which is actually spent on the coach. Although you hear a bit about Odysseus as you travel around there's actually very little on the island to suggest he lived there. One stop has a small museum which is free to enter but it's literally two rooms with not much in the way of artifacts or exhibits. The monastery that you visit is actually closed now and just maintained for tourists, but the view from up there is incredible. Honestly I think the guide book hypes up this excursion more than it deserves - Ithaca is very sleepy and although it was nice to see the island it was one of the most expensive tours and I didn't feel like we got our moneys worth. The Island Tour on the other hand is kind of like a "Greatest Hits" of Kefalonia, showing you Assos, Fiskardo, the Melissani Lake and Drogarati Caves and a visit to a local winery to top it off. Very reasonably priced and although a long day (9-6) it went quickly. The only random part of it was the stop at a honey shop for a tasting (and buying, if they can persuade you) on the way to Assos - not mentioned in the brief and for diabetics a complete waste of time. But as that was first thing it didn't impact on the day too much. So well worth checking this place when considering your excursions but just bear in mind what you want to get out of the day is what I'd advise. Also you can book Lassi-Rent-a-Boat through here - also worth considering, we had a great day!

We booked this trip with the local operators having seen the good reviews and the higher prices tourist firms charge. Catherine, our Welsh guide, was informative and witty throughout the day and clearly enjoys her work. As first time visitors to Kefalonia we wanted to get a taste of the place and this was the ideal way to do it. Other reviewers have described the tour in detail and indeed you get a flavour of everything. The visits to the Drogarati caves and Lake Melissani are optional and cost 10€ for both, but are well worth it. Those with mobility problems shouldn’t opt for the cave trip as there are lots of steps to climb down and then to climb back up. All in all a great introduction to Kefalonia with a lovely guide and the “best driver on the island” Demetrios, who negotiated all the tight bends with ease. Highly recommended,

Booked with Panem Tours days in advance to return to room at 10pm the night before the trip to a note posted through to say the trip is cancelled. Talk about last minute notice and no compassion. Rubbish company.. Avoid!!!!!
