a great view of the nice city Bad Urach and the surrounding area!
Aug 2019
If you visit the waterfall, it is worth taking a short walk from the top of the waterfall to the castle ruins. It is about 2 kilometers through the forest, with an ascent at the end. It is possible to reach for everyone. You do not need a good shape to reach it.
The castle itself is not restored, but there are a few remains of the wall.

Dreamlike, like in a picture book - an interesting castle ruin from the 11th century with an impressive view of Bad Urach and the surrounding area - mountains, forests, fields, valleys and the city with its old buildings
When be there around on a nice day and you like nature - go for it!

A lot of beautiful and easy trails up to the Burg ruin Hohenurach
Jul 2018 • Couples
It's a must to have å look into the city the beautiful markets place, too. Here you find a lot of Cafes and restaurants, a lot of the old houses in "Fachwerk" style. :) Therefor you should take the trail down to city center and you can going back later to the parking place Waterfall? - by train (2 stations), local bus or taxi. - have a look on the map, and you will figuer it out.
Well, up to the Burg ruin it's easy; I recommend to start going up to the "Wasserfall", and continue behind this spot, by just following the signs to the Burg/Castle ruin. it's a walk , total approx.of 1- 1,5 hour. There are some beautiful scenic lookouts on this trail.:) Have a nice walk!

Great Walk
Apr 2019 • Family
We aren’t athletic at all, but managed this walk fine. The last few hundred metres were very steep but we walked from the car park to the top in under an hour. So much to explore, we were glad to have a picnic lunch and take our time. We appreciated the history being in English too.

Excellent hike!
Aug 2018 • Friends
We did this hike & visited Bad Urach as a day trip from Stuttgart. It takes about ~45 minutes to an hour by car to reach the starting point of the hike which is just outside of Bad Urach. It seems most people parked at P23, where there is a beer garden & cafe. From the cafe you hike pass the waterfall and then continue to the ruins before returning back on the same route. You can also do a loop hike by parking at P23. For the loop route from P23, walk back toward the train tracks (waterfall train stop), go right toward Bad Urach. Stay to the right of the fork in the road and follow the sidewalk until you see the Bad Urach train stop. Just under the train overpass you will see P19, where you can start the hike. There are plenty of directional signs. We parked at P23, then started the hike at P19 so we ended at the beer garden and had lunch. The staff at the cafe spoke some English and were very friendly. The menu is only in German but you should be able to figure it out; we did a lot of pointing. You order at the window on the right and pick up at the window on the left, no table service.

The hike was fairly steep if you follow the loop route as we did. There is a lot of tree cover, beautiful views from the top and very good of directional signs. At the bottom of the waterfall, when you reach the pasture look up at the castle ruins, it's a great picture spot!

Lovely countryside
Aug 2018 • Family
Lot's of really nice walking to do around this area. We parked at the Maisental car park (not far from the Bad Urach Wasserfall train station). From there we done a really nice, easy walk up to the waterfall, round to the ruins and then back down to the car park. The uphill parts to the top of the waterfall and up to the ruins were obviously a bit more strenuous, but otherwise it's mostly flat and easy walking. It's a nice walk up to the top of the waterfall, where there's a cafe to refresh yourself. Then it's a flat walk round to the ruins where it's a very steep walk (but not difficult at all) to get to them. Great views from the ruins. Then once down again, a flat and easy walk back to the car park. Lovely countryside and scenery.

Wonderful walk
Jun 2015 • Solo
Walked with my dog to the ruin. At first the ascent was more gradual but the closer you get to the ruins, the steeper the climb! It is beautiful at the top. Unfortunately they were doing some repairs and the only way to see all of the ruins and views was to climb the scaffolding/ladder setup. I found that a little stressful as I went up holding my little dog. But the views were gorgeous. Take lots of water if you go on a hot day!

Extensive ruins and scenic views
Jan 2015 • Couples
Bad Urach is a fantastic place to hike and the Hohenurach ruins offer an interesting backdrop for stunning views of the Swabian alps. The castle complex is free to enter and you are allowed to go almost everywhere inside of and on top of the ruins, which are actually a lot bigger than I was expecting. My wife and I ran into only a few other visitors on the cold, wintry January day and everybody we passed was very friendly and greeted us with a warm "Gruss Gott". The is a small plaque in German and English which details a little bit about the history of the castle accompanied with a map of the entire grounds. From the castle ruins it's an easy hike of one mile or so to the gorgeous Urach Waterfall.

A couple notes of caution, there are not a lot of signs on the hike up the hill to the castle, but once you are on the main trail leading up, all you do is stay on it. Since the the elevation of the trail is rather gradual, at times I wasn't sure if we missed a turn in the snow, but the main trail does get you to the top.

Secondly, make sure you wear boots/shoes with good traction. The hill trail and the ice covered steps by the waterfall were treacherously slippery.

The town of Bad Urach is also well worth a visit. Despite its relatively small size, the town has one of the most beautiful timber house market squares that I've seen. The Rathaus and Schloss are particularly worth seeing. Bad Urach makes a great day trip from Stuttgart; it took us less than 35 minutes by car. The hiking area has ample free parking.

Nice day hike/walk
Jun 2014 • Family
If you are staying in the Stuttgart area, Bad Urach and the ruins known as Burg Hohenurach are worth a day-trip. Take a leisurely 3-6 km hike up to the castle ruins and then hang out and photographs the surrounding Swäbisch Alb. Then you can hike back down to Bad Urach and enjoy and ice cream along with the local architecture. There are bathrooms and food available for purchase at the top of the nearby waterfall about 1 km away, which is also worth seeing.
