About
The castle of Saint-Jean dominates the town and is a fine example of medieval architecture and of the history of Nogent-le-Rotrou. The rectangular keep is 30 metres high and is 60 metres above the Huisne valley. Its construction began in the first years of the 11th century after the first Lord of Nogent, Rotrou I. The end of 12th century and beginning of the 13th saw the construction of the circular enclosure and 7 defensive towers. The castle of Saint-Jean has withstood many sieges in its time, the most violent was probably in 1428 when the Count of Salisbury burnt the keep and destroyed the inside of the building. In 1624, de Sully became the owner and built the attractive Louis XIII pavilion against the north rampart. The interior has been completely renovated since the 1960s and now houses a local history museum with exhibits and documents about country life in Perche, as well as on the history of the town and the castle. It also houses various temporary exhibitions.

Nice little Chateau

Good place to while away a few hours in Nogent Le Rotrou. Views from the Chateau are good. Not as geared up for the international tourist as some Chateaus but still a pleasant way to see some culture.

It looks medieval too!

As we happened to be staying in Nogent-le-Rotrou for the night, in the early evening we drove down to the site of Chateau Saint-Jean which seems somewhat more of a ruin as you walk around the perimeter as some of the walls had steel supports to hold it together. If you are there when it’s open there is a museum inside of local history for just a few euros entrance fee (see the website). We found the building quite enchanting, in the light of a summer evening, as it seemed more like a medieval castle should be after having just visited some of the more elaborate and well-kept offerings of the Loire Valley. At the rear of the structure there are views of the city of Nogent-le-Rotrou and surrounds. Also walking around the stone houses of the adjoining neighbourhood was also very rewarding and pleasing to the eye. The medieval castle and surrounding area was an unexpected find on a just passing through stop-over.

A lot of tourist attractions are closed this time of year in France, thankfully this was open. The chap on reception was very patient with our lack of French and was very cheery and helpful. The château was amazing with so much history. , a must see if you are in the area

Wonderful views

It was a good climb up the hill to the chateau, but we were well rewarded on our arrival with views over the town and countryside.
