About
The Bajo del Tigre sector is physically separated from the Children's Eternal Rain Forest and is managed by the MCL. Bajo del Tigre is situated in Monteverde and is approximately 29 hectares in size, although the property is surrounded by other forested properties in the zone. The type of forest found in Bajo del Tigre is rare and it is poorly represented in the country. This is because these forests were cut down to make way for coffee plantations and urban zones. Bajo del Tigre presents an altitudinal range from 1,020 to 1,380 meters above sea level and receives over 2,400 mm of rain annually. In this type of seasonal forest, the dry period extends from January through the beginning of May. Bajo del Tigre has a reception center for visitors and a gift shop with items related to our organization and conservation in general. In addition, next to the reception center is a "kids' house" oriented to environmental education for local kids. The main visitors of Bajo del Tigre are national and international students. However, it is being used more and more by ecotourists and occasionally by researchers. In Bajo del Tigre, there are about 4.4 Km of trails that allow you to enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the area, as well as an excellent view of the sunset over the Nicoya Gulf.

- G CAnchorage, Alaska999 contributionsExcellent cloud forest hiking without crowdsAfter seeing the big crowds and challenging parking situation at the Monteverde Forest Reserve, we decided to go to this place instead — and were really pleased with our decision :). We didn’t encounter anyone else during our hike through the cloud forest, and enjoyed the many kilometers of trails here. Free parking close to the entrance was really nice as well. Definitely recommend the Children’s Forest!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 24, 2023
- Pam M36 contributionsNice experienceWent for a night walk The guide was very knowledgeable. We saw a tarantula , a scorpion, a frog and other assorted insects. There is never any guarantee of what you might see on a night tour but it an experience in itself being in the rainforest at night.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 16, 2024
- Kevinator21 contributionsCalm hikeMy family and I visited on our recent trip to Monteverde. We did a self-guided day tour. The Children's Eternal Rain Forest was very calm and uncrowded. The trails were well marked and maintained. Parking was easy. The staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and spoke English very well. We saw lots of butterflies and birds and really enjoyed the rainforest.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 20, 2024

I left my visit to the reserve feeling like a direct donation to this good cause might have been a better use of time than the visit. The person working in the shop could barely tear himself away from his phone so we could pay for our admission. He gave us a laminated map of the trails with numbered stopping points but we realized after it was too far to come back that we had no reference a to what each numbered stop meant and the signs listed just the number with no other details.
It was interesting to see the forrest at a lower elevation from the other reserves.
A reccomendation for others visting the reserve: the trails are steeper more challenging than in the other nearby reserves. All but the surest footed hikers could benefit from hiking boots and hiking poles.

We hired a guide for this hike and it was honestly one of my favorite experiences of Costa Rica. We saw so many beautiful birds and butterflies in addition to howler monkeys and even an adult viper. The best thing was how peaceful and completely uncrowned it was compared to places like Manuel Antonio and the hanging bridges in Arenal. We saw 4 other people during the 3 hours we spent there. It is truly a magical and beautiful place that embodies the essence of the area.

The Children’s Eternal Rainforest Night Tour was a wonderful adventure with our school-aged children on our trip to Costa Rica in December. Our guide, Guillermo, was super knowledgeable, which made us feel both safe and engaged. The forest comes alive when you find the right guide and know what special and hidden treasures surround you. It was the perfect introduction to the forest so we were able to spot the elements around us on subsequent hikes.

We went early in the morning to Bajo del Tigre and saw no one else on the trails. We saw dozens of birds, including a pair of long-tailed manakins. We also saw a coati and agouti, and several spiny lizards. The key is to slow down, look, and listen. The trails are beautiful!

Magical in every way. I love the story of how the forest started with elementary students in Sweden who wanted to raise money for a reserve in Costa Rica, and the limitless ripples it created across 40+ countries giving!
The hike is beautiful, mirador breathtaking, and nature limitless. I did this easily with lots of stops to listen and breathe in the moments in about an hour and a half!
Best view from the viewpoint I've seen in Monteverde!

We explored the forest by day (unguided) and night (guided). The staff were very flexible and helpful in accommodating the needs of our group for the night walk.
The trails are well kept and marked, with trivia along the children's trail.
The night guide was very friendly and was keen to share his knowledge with us.

A beautiful place. They had a very informative interpretive trail, with a map to find the locations of the interpretive sites and booklet with information about the ecology, plants and animals of the area. We did not see the Three-wattled Bellbird, but did get a good close up look at Lesson's Motmot. Not too many visitors the day we went, in fact the parking lot was empty so we thought it was closed. The trails are somewhat steep and with loose rocks, making it a bit treacherous. Not recommended for small children (even though it is "Children's Eternal Rain Forest" or for people who may have a hard time on steeper/rocky trails.

We throughly enjoyed this place. It was quiet, heard the howling wind, birds. Saw some birds too. Summer Tanager, Keel Bill Toucan, Emerald Toucan, Long Tailed Manakins, 3 Wattled Bellbird. The trails are beautiful and well maintained, the staff at the information center friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We loved it so much that we went back the next day. It was truly forest bathing and what a beautiful place. Thanks to the effort of Children...

Loved hiking here both during the day to see a Bellbird and at night where we saw and heard a variety of wildlife. The Children's Eternal Rain Forest is one of my favorite conservation stories - with children around the world helping to preserve a very large and highly biologically diverse forest. Getting to Bajo del Tigre is easy and there's close parking. Great and friendly staff and a small gift shop are also nice. Hiking here is relatively easy with several well marked trails to choose from. Wonderful place to visit!

Hi i lime to know if we Can Sée animal at This hour?
Written February 23, 2015
I feel bad that no one answers. Perhaps you should consider places that would.
In any case let me tell you that you will see "animals" in many places within the Monteverde area, even on the road if you check. The main issue is if you want to pay for a professional guided tour that is 100% environmentally friendly. There are many tours and establishments that are not and they feed animals so visitors see them and those places i would not support at all because on the long run, they are harming the highly endangered cloud forest.
On the other hand there are few places with professional naturalist guides who care for the forest and are currently doing something about it like, research, environmental education and conservation. I would try those places to make sure my money goes a long way. Check for places that may offer 20 years of experience to get the best night guided walk, there's only two. And check where the money goes too.
