- val390Philadelphia, Pennsylvania44 contributionsTour for you if interested in agriculture/sustainability or want to be an ecotouristGreat farm tour of the Valle Escondido property. The tour starts in the classroom which is an interactive learning setting about permaculture and the properties values and practices. Then we moved out into the farm area and learned about the crops, animals and cycle of the farm to hotel practices. We even got to try some of the flowers/plants/fruits grown on site. The cost of the tour is actually a donation to an education program that the hotel and farm hosts during the offseason which we were happy to learn and support. The entire tour took about 2 hours or so.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 1, 2023
- Mary Y4 contributionsMagical! This place is magical! Feels like a nature oasis. And the permaculture tour is AMAZING!!! The guide was so knowledgeable and it’s incredible what they are doing here. Best tour in Costa Rica, and we did many. Cannot recommend enough. So worth the price.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 10, 2023
- Rebecca N2 contributionsExcellent courseVisited for the permaculture tour with a class - I wish we could have stayed longer! It was so cool to learn about sustainability practices and permaculture in practice. This property is gorgeous; AND I learned so much. Will certainly be back to try the restaurant, especially after learning about the farm to table practices.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 9, 2024
- Alissa T1 contributionAmazing experience and great staff!I went on a tour through the farm/reserve and it was such a great experience! As an environmental studies student and study abroad student, this experience taught me so much about permaculture and the sustainable practices Valle Escondido does. I will definitely be back to try the farm to table restaurant!!Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 10, 2024
- P hernándezMonteverde, Costa Rica2 contributionsGreat experienceMe, my brothers, and my teacher all went on a permaculture tour recently at the Hidden Valley Permaculture Farm. Since arriving in Costa Rica we have done several farm tours, however this one was most certainly my favorite. We started out in the classroom learning about the basics of permaculture and sustainability, afterwards we toured their grounds and farm. Overall, it was really fun to see sustainability on such a scale and the many ways that they approached it. I would 100% do it again!Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 13, 2024
- Taylor W1 contributionCan't miss permaculture tour - absolutely incredible!!We stayed at valle escondido specifically because we were interested in the educational permaculture aspect and the permaculture tour far exceeded our (already high) expectations. It was amazing! My partner was like Charlie at the Chocolate Factory. The first 45 minutes or so covered the ethics and principles of permaculture to give a foundation and the rest of the time was a guided tour of the property to see those components in practice. 12/10 would recommend! Can't miss it!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 15, 2024
- Sean E2 contributionsGreat Hotel!!!Really great concept, and really greatly executed!! I learned so much that I never knew or even heard of before, and it was nice having such good living spaces while giving back to the surrounding nature. The views and activities available at the hotel alone made the whole experience very much worth it!!Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 26, 2024

The staff was lovely and so helpful. Rooms were gorgeous! The views on a clear day is Nicoya Bay. There are hiking trails and gardens to enjoy. A free breakfast every morning and delicious pizza and other food. We would all love to go back!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024

If you're staying at Valle Escondido, DEFINITELY take the Permaculture tour. Walking around the hotel campus itself is pretty amazing, but when you learn about all of the details both large and small of this operation, it gave me a whole new appreciation for what they're doing. Our guide was super knowledgable and even asks us specific details of our living space to try to suggest ideas of how we, too, can implement practices of permaculture! He offered suggestions for books to read, gave us specific didactic information around the essence and principles of permaculture, and we walked around various sites of the hotel property.
It's a really cool experience!

We stayed at the Monteverde Inn for 4 nights. It wasn’t until the last day unfortunately that we got to take the Permaculture tour. I say unfortunately because until you take the “tour”, you don’t understand what this place is all about. It’s similar to watching a play and enjoying it, but then you get a chance to go backstage, talk to the playwright, the actors, the director, observe the sets and props and suddenly the passion , inspiration, and hard work behind the play make everything brilliantly clear. The concept behind the Monteverde Inn at Valle Escondido is permaculture design...caring for the Earth, others, and sharing. Here they’re making it work, sometimes with trial and error as was pointed out, but that’s part of the process. I could review the concepts behind the design of the space at the inn, the compost systems, the plantings, the capturing of grey water, but it would take too long. It’s such an inspiring pleasure, in view of the challenges facing our planet, to see responsibility put into action. You should come and stay at this inn, a little bit of heaven, and you must take advantage of this experience.

Wonderful example of how to be regenerative in a way that allocates finance to maintain this cycle of life. The person who guided us was so informative and they did a thorough job of teaching us about their way of permaculture. I Loved the experience and loved the insight of the guide :) definitely recommend anyone who comes to Monteverde to inform themselves about evolving their relationship with the land.

The presentation about permaculture was very interesting and informative. I personally have worked on multiple permaculture farms, and some people in my group have no experience farming, but the presentation was still engaging for people with all levels of experience and everyone learned something new. You could tell that the owners and workers are very knowledgeable, passionate, and hardworking. This was reflected not only in the things they said in the presentation, but could be seen in the landscape. As someone who works with similar farming methods, I can say that creating a landscape like Valle Escondido is a monumental task. It was inspiring to see from this perspective, for the fact that it is designed to be beautiful and peaceful as well as just functional, and for the ideals of sustainability behind it. I would recommend that everyone who visits Monteverde tours this location.

So cool! We stayed at Monteverde Inn which is an Eco - hotel and went on the tour which starts with 45 min lecture. Then walk around the area and get explanation and demo of worm farm, where the laundry is located relative to the angle the sun comes in as well as extensive watering systems through multiple layers. I thought it was more organic farming but it's so much more! Very worthwhile even if you don't stay at the hotel. Call before as we initially were told your would be at 2.30 but yesterday was at 1 pm and those who came later got the visit before the lecture

Highly recommend this tour to everybody! I don’t garden much (like most US citizens) and this tour offered a lot of practical and inspirational information. The philosophy of permaculture opened my eyes and touched my heart. I learned its principles and how they can be applied to growing food or to my occupation as a realtor.
Our time with Jonah was mind expanding and made me more aware of my place in the world and my responsibility to be more sustainable. I plan to apply these principles more in life.
Besides all that, it was really fun! Who doesn’t like walking around and seeing cool inventions and beautiful gardens. We took ourselves out for a fantastic meal at the on-site restaurant at the end, all harvested here. ¡Pura Vida!

Our family loved the Jonah's permaculture tour. He's extremely knowledgeable, friendly and opened our eyes to the power of permacutlure in our everyday lives. It was an absolute blast to get to know the farm and the great work they're doing.
As a lawyer with young kids, it was great to have them exposed to such experiences.

Jonna’s permaculture tour was personal, informative and inspirational.
My husband and I, both hobby gardeners, were lucky enough to have a tour to ourselves. We were given foundational knowledge and shown examples of permaculture in action, on the Hidden Valley grounds, where they truly strive for full circle sustainability.
Jonna’s mission is admirable and accessible.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a good time! The highlights for me were: the trails in the preserve (saw some cool animals!) the great views, and I really liked the permaculture tour.
The permaculture tour was a great intro to permaculture, we toured the farm and Jonah (owner, tour guide) showed me the current and future projects. It was very awesome to be able to converse with him about the principles of permaculture, I had many questions and ideas and we had a nice back and forth. The tour inspired me to go do some further reading and learn about permaculture. They are living the values of permaculture here!

An unique place in Monteverde!!
close from main town but inside huge forest, amazing Pacific gulf views, learned a lot from my visit there! totally worth going over there! the project has a sustainable hotel-restaurant-farm- where you can walk among trails as well, book private guided tours or permaculture design courses, or night walks. Lots of things to do here!!!
