Uganda - the mighty white Nil river! Murchison Falls National Park left us with stunning and disappointing memories. The Park allows for self safari drives and I would recommend this possibility when you have a high clearance 4x4 vehicle. The west and south of the park has beautiful landscape and plenty of wildlife to spot. At this time we didn’t find any predators but we had a nice 8h safari. The other part, the disappointing side, is where big roads are under construction and the environment is totally destroyed. We where told that oil & gas resources had been found and digging & drilling will start soon. This will be the End of Murchison Falls!

We took a trip to the top of Murchison Falls on our way out of Murchison Falls NP and on the last day of our trip in Uganda.
It was an absolutely fitting end to a spectacular trip. The power of the waterfall is immense, and when you are standing at the top and getting soaked in the spray thrown up from the rapids you get a real sense of this.
The sights are amazing.
Simply a must-see on your way to or from Murchison Falls National Park

At least this activity is included in your 40$ entrance fee for Murshison Park. Very rare..
The most Powerful waterfall in Africa for sure!!! Turnoff road about 13 kilos is quick and almost finished with construction.
Feel the mist on your skin!!!!

Had rained over the previous week, so lots of water. Tarmac road from Masindi to Falls, Lots of Parking, Easy access and great views.
However a trail is available if you pay $15 Non resident or $10 Resident, which is a bit much considering you have payed $40 to enter the park to mainly see the falls.
If entering from the North via Tanga gate, Tarmac road not fully complete, but no need of ferry as a bridge has been built so access over the river is quick and easy and no cost.

The falls are spectacular whichever way you view them, but really must not be missed from the top. The drive there is tricky as the road is terrible in parts, but the view and the spray and the noise is amazing. Beware of tsetse flies though!

Great experience camping near the falls with a gorgeous view over the fast running river. You will sleep under a protected shelter with the loud and relaxing sound of the gushing water. Top tip: wake up early and enjoy the view of the fall before the tourists start coming at 8am. Amenities were clean and in good working condition. Recommended by your travel buddy Will. Murchison's falls is one of the most amazing places to visit ever with Simon of Grime Depths Safaris from Gulu City, Uganda. We got picked up from Heldan Inn a hotel in Gulu City and went to the park, we had a wildlife safari with various animals sightings, boat cruise with views of hippos, crocodiles, birds, bottom of falls and the top of falls experience is so exciting, we also did a thrilling nature walk at the top as well, I really had a good time. I need a repeat on the tour some day.

The falls are quite spectacular and worth a visit. As for visiting and staying in the park, I am not sure - if you can get away with squeezing everything into a day, I think that makes sense.
The problem is you pay 45USD Per person per day to enter the park (plus the car and entry fee to the falls), regardless of what you are doing, including transiting the park. This very quickly adds up if you are planning an activity or two or have a family.
I have visited Uganda several times, but until now I have not had the opportunity to do many touristy things, it is clear to me that tourism in Africa is very quickly becoming beyond the reach of most families, with exclusive resorts, and expensive entry fees. I cannot see how an average family could afford to travel to Uganda and experience these wonderful sites together.

Big park with lots of places to drive. Mainly savannah, some woods and riverside places. Great place to see lots of birds, insects and animals. Saw about 70 different species of birds, 7 mammals, numerous trees and insects.
Not very busy when I went, weather good. A guide is a great assets if you want to see lots of birds, reptiles and animals. If you want to see trees, pretty views and antelopes then don't necessarily need one.
Giraffe, 2 sorts of antelopes, elephant, buffalo and lots of birds are easy to see. Other mammals are harder. A guide is an asset for seeing these or identifying birds. An open top car is a great asset, though one with shade is better unless you want sunburn.
I stayed 3 nights at Sambiya Lodge which I thought was excellent. Trip to see the Falls was good.

The view of the waterfall from the top is amazing and shouldn’t be missed. The water thunders through the narrow gorge, throwing up spray and rainbows. There are several viewing points near the car park and it was surprisingly quiet for such an incredible natural sight.

I am looking for input as I am planning our trip to Africa from the US. We have about 2.5 weeks and I really want to focus on two areas so as to not have to pay for more visas. Murchison Falls is one of the places I am considering so we can experience the Nile. I want to do some local cultural tours and a boat tour. I plan to spend about 4 days in the areas. Then we plan to fly to Nairobi and and take a 5 day per-arranged safari tour to Masai Mara. From your travels, would you recommend Murchison Falls area if you can only visit two regions of Africa?

Anywhere specific you could recommend

Hi, Sorry for the very late reply.
I stayed at The Paara Lodge which I would highly recommend.
We stayed there in early April.
It was cheap due to the start of the rain season however, no rain and very few visitors in the hotel or the park so we had fantastic uninterrupted views of the wildlife.

Very sorry for the late reply.
My trip was a part of a group booking so I didn't arrange anything except a few trips whilst in Masindi, Uganda.
The Queen Elizabeth NP is a great place for seeing a good number of species but no Cheetah, Hyena or leopards.
We are travelling to Kenya in late July to the Maasai Mara, Amboselli NP, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakaru.
We will see the great migration, the big five plus many species of birds.
We would recommend Zebra Plain Tented Lodge, Maasai Mara as a great base.

What is the cost of the permit to enter the park?
Does the Sambiya River Lodge offer safaris/ boat trips, or is that booked separately?
Written December 1, 2017
Sorry but I had a pre-laid safari trip and cannot tell you the cost of the permit. Whatever the cost, I am sure it is nominal and definitely would not avoid the park for that reason. I would write to the lodge directly for your question about boat trips. I'd avoid a large group boat trip in favor of a private small boat for two people and a guide right up to the base of Murchison falls.
