Saadani NP is a relatively new park with a growing animal population. It is very good for bird watching, elephants, giraffes and herbivores. And also, for the lions, but unfortunately, they escaped our sight when we visited them.

This is not a park where you just go in and expect to see wildlife at every corner. Most of negative reviews and criticism stem from people charging in on their own, without any knowledge of the roads, animal movements and usually at wrong time of the day. The best time to go for game drive is in the morning between 6-8 and then late in the evening between 5-7. Animals in Saadani are adapted to coastal heat and they will stay put in the shade for most of the day. Giraffes, waterbuck and reebok are common but for anything else you will need bit of luck and preferably a guide who knows the area. Boat trip on Wami river is a highlight, great for birdlife, hippos and crocs, but you will need to pick up a guide for this too to appreciate all the goings on, as the boat drivers are just rangers with very little knowledge and English. Don't expect to see animals on the beach, this is very unfortunate and misleading campaign by TANAPA. There is only one access to the beach and it is through public campsite. Overall what wins Saadani over is ever-changing scenery. Grasslands, mangroves, baobab forest, acacia filled plains, palmyra palms valleys up north ... Best is to book yourself into Saadaani safari lodge for few nights or Tembo Kijanis owned camp on the way to Madete gate ....

I went to this game park with a friend. We did a one day safari as well as a boat safari. It is not expensive if you use your own car. Because it is not visited as much it is expensive to rent a safari car to visit this park by itself.Best to get a package deal or use a regular vehicle. The animals are not as easy to see as other parks because of the amount of wooded areas so if you want tobe sure to see alot of different animals you need to stay more than one day.Nevertheless in our one day safari we saw everything that is usually seen in the park except zebras and lions. This park is not commercialized like the other parks. As someone who has visited other parks in Tanzania, the things that stood out about this park was the boat safari where you see hippos real close, the amt of young giraffes i saw,as well as the amt of deer like animals. If you are only able to visit one national park in Tanzania, i recommend going to Ruaha or another park to be sure to see many animals, but if you have time to visit several parks this is a good one to visit. It is very unique as it is along both an ocean and a river and less commercialized.

First of all, everyone should know that this not to long ago was a game reserve. For rich westeners to come shoot lions and elephants. Its a pretty small area, the elephants all remember too well when their mums and dads were shot- they get startled when they see the safari wan. Also, there is a sense of deeply rooted corruption at the western gate- we had to pay a ransom to get out of the park, they tried to avoid stamping us out, which is illegal under Tanzanian law, as all visitors to the park must be counted. Basically they wanted to put the money in their own pocket- the clergy had suddenly disappeared and so on...

The park is actually full of great wildlife, but because it's still quite wild and has thick bush you have to go with a good driver to see it. In one day's driving (and boat trip) we saw Lions, giraffes, eagles, hippos, loads of antelope, wildebeest, buffalo, countless amazing birds, crocodiles, huge families of elephants, and much more

Saadani National Park is a wonderful game park within a half-day's drive of Dar, and offers plenty of game viewing! With a 4wd, this is an incredible and isolated park--no need to worry about loads of tourist crowding out the views. We saw an African civet cat, giraffes, elephants, baboons, monkeys, birds, and loads of antelope in just a 3-hour morning game drive--in the rain! Leopards and lions are still able to be spotted in Saadani as well. Don't miss the chance to see Africa's wild animals in the open spaces of Saadani!

(And I highly recommend hiring a safari guide/vehicle at Tembo Kijani for an extremely knowledgeable guide and a wonderful experience!)

We did 2 days 1 night Safari in Saadani National Park from Dar Es Salaam with Halisi African Adventures And Our guide/driver France was fantastic. He was taking pride in showing us the best. We Saw a lot of animals plus much more. He was diligent, safe, knowledgeable about plants, animals, roads and routes. All and all this trip with Halisi African Adventures was a total success. After shopping around, their prices are also very competitive.
Highly recommend Halisi African Adventures to everyone who wish to visit Tanzania.

We arrived during the rainy season, though no rain, and therefore animals were hard to find. When there is only one or two water holes then it is much easier. This Park you can stay right in the Park at cottages right on the Indian Ocean. So you could walk the beach after going on safari. We saw lots of giraffe, and various water bucks etc. many birds. On the beach was a big turtle nest but alas to early to see the new borns making for the ocean. The best of both worlds and thank you Furahini Ngoda, Experience East Africa, for taking me there. Some of these not as well know places in Tanzania are well worth the visit. The extra bonus was having the Ocean as well and fresh fish everyday to eat.
