Real Scottish History
Jun 2021
Sat high on a hill this ruin really stands out. When you learn of the history and its part in the English control of the Highlands, it makes it more atmospheric.

Interesting ruin

Worth a quick visit if you're in the area. Within walking distance of kingussie, there is a small car park for around 10 cars.

Substantial ruins with free 24/7 access
Oct 2020
This is open continuously and access is via a field of sheep. There are gates which you are expected to close after going through.

Access is unlimited and there are signs posted with plenty of information about each part of the building.

It is a substantial ruin but worth a visit if you are interested in the Jacobite rebellions or military history. Also great views.

Nice to see
Nov 2020
We arrived here at the end of the afternoon, when it started to get dark which gave the building a special atmosphere. Looked lovely with the place lit up from the car park. Nice to have a look around and read about the history.

Very open to elements but very interesting and a great view from the hill. Two artists were going pencil drawing of the lay-out and was interesting to watch them work.

Even on a cold rainy day, Ruthven is worth a visit.

What is there not to like about a ruined building with history, which is always open and is free to enter.

We love to stop here with guests and tell them the stories of the Jacobite uprisings.

Lovely setting

Was a wee walk up though worth it for the view alone. Was nice wee walk round though could have done with a bit more info.

Dramatic military ruin
Sep 2020 • Couples
Part of the English military machine that was the response to the 15 and 45 Jacobite uprisings

The place has a sense of history and is plaintively inspiring

Self guided ruins that look good day or night
Aug 2020
Spent about 30minutes here having a look around. There's not too much to see apart from a few derelict buildings, but the history of the location is well presented on information boards dotted around at key locations.

The Barracks are floodlit at night, so can recommend driving by after dark to see it all lit up.

WELL WORTH A VISIT
Aug 2020
After having seen this many times when passing on the main road we decided to take a trip to see it up close. Small Car Park and a short walk takes you to the Barracks. This has been well preserved over the years and a great part of History. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area
