This hydro-electric dam has a road running along its top, so you can drive over it and on the eastern side there is a small car park for people to stop and take photographs. The dam was completed in 2002 and it created the largest reservoir in Europe. At present the water is very low due to the lack of rainfall and it is said that the village of Luz, which was drowned under the water, is now visible.

The large concrete dam wall is impressive to we engineering types but the surrounding views are breathtaking. The massive lake created by the dam extends into Spain, and high ground at the north-eastern side is a great vantage point.

It's a nice place, always nice seeing a great dam, but that's about it. There aro no coffee amenities or readily visible walk paths so the experience will be the view of the lake and dam and otherwise depend largely on weather and if the water is flowing visibly or not.

The contrast in the colors in the area are amazing. The actual crossing of the garage is not the best scenery at all. There are lots of secluded "beaches" to enjoy the fresh water and an excellent break from a hot day of motorbike cruising in the Algarve. Don´t forget to visit Monsaraz and Mourao.

The Barragem do Algueva is located a few km's northwest of the City of Moura on Hiwy. N-384. It consists of a large hydro-electric dam and generation facility built I believe in 2002. The construction of the dam resulted in a new large lake/reservoir which provides a source of irrigation for the surrounding country side. The dam and adjacent lake are very impressive and the project and vista are very impressive.

largest lake in Europe built by humans. Very nice for sightwalkings and birdwatching. Lovely area to spent some days visiting the surroundings and old villages nearby. In the middle of Alentejo where you can find the best wines from Portugal

We had a long day out driving and this was our final stop, the largest man made lake in Europe and well worth a visit.
