The viewpoint of Flydalsjuvet is located about 4km from the center of Geiranger and on the banks of Highway 63. It is easily reachable by car or with the hop-on-hop-off. From this point you have a lovely view of the city of Geiranger, the fjord, the mountains and the waterfalls, it seems like you are dreaming awake. Access is free. Impermeable!

We visited this viewpoint as part of a day long cruise from Ålesund to Geiranger. The cruise company had a tour bus waiting g for us at the dock to take us up the long, narrow winding road. The drive up was almost as fun as the viewpoint. Great views of the end of the fjord and the snow capped mountains lining the fjord. There is a great walk down to the Norsk center and museum which was beautiful as well.

This is the classic Norwegian fjord view. Spectaular to say the least. Well worth a stop. We went here twice in two days and the traffic was severe in the evening. In the morning we were almost alone. Something to consider if you have the time to choose.

We chose not to go to Dalsnibba (the higher lookout) because we wanted to be closer to the fjord. So I can’t really say which is better but we definitely enjoyed Flydalsjuvet viewpoint. We had come over the mountains from Skjolden (AMAZING views on this drive) and thought this was a perfect view of the Fjord. I would highly recommend driving across Norway.

When you arrive in the car park there is a small path behind the toilets/building that will lead you too a ledge overhanging the canyon which will give you a great view of the fjord in the distance! Great for photographers

From the tourist information centre walk on the main road behind the hotel Geiranger uphill. there is a church on the left on the hilltop. You may take a shortcut up a steep path to the church and walk though the church grounds to the road on the other side otherwise continue on the road. Don't forget to look back to admire the views.
No official path on roadside but traffic is considerate of walkers. Continue walking passing by Hotel Union and you will see a sign post for Fjord Centre in to the right. We detoured there to visit the public toilets and later returned on our return journey.
You will see a sign for Vinje camping and walk by a waterfall - there is a pathway into the right leading you into Vinje Camping - walk through her over a bridge through the camping site and you shorten your journey taking you away from the road walking. You will end out on the main road on the other side. You will see a sign across the road to the right pointing to a path on the right. a steep path through a field and again you return to the main road. Uphill a few metres and you will see a signpost for Fossen Camping and for Flydalsjuvet among other routes.
You will arrive at Fossen Camping. By the waterfall on the left there is a path with steep steps leading up to the left.
Continue this path - beautiful views down over the valley and you can see the winding road that you have been avoiding.
Almost there - back to the main road - a few more metres up hill and you will arrive at the lower of two viewpoints. The lower stop is a car park for cars and campervans. The buses seem to drive up to the higher stop a few metres up.
A rocky area but open space with beautiful views over Geiranger and a seat with a view with your name on it!! Toilets available here and a picnic area. We returned the same route . Got chatting to a local man who rents rooms who loves to meet people passing by. There are further walks - This man told us about the walk to which gives 360 degree views a further 50 minute walk - Holemyrane - but time did not allow for us to be able to do this. We read to allow 1 hr 10 minutes for the walk up to Flydalsjuvet but it we had many stops along the way so it took us longer. the return journey took about this time. We retraced our steps but detoured when we got to fjord Centre and took the Fossavendring Waterfall walks - boardwalk and steep steps with viewpoints -Storfossen waterfall platform and Fossavendring .
Thoroughly enjoyed this walk. What made it extra special was that we met a lovely Canadian couple who were about to turn back at Vinje Camping as they were unsure of the route and we asked them to join us on the walk. So we met new friends and our paths kept crossing and hope that they will continue to do so. Bring water , a snack and always be prepared for a change in weather.

The best viewpoint in Geiranger. We did initially take a bus which went to Flydalsjuvet & Eagle Bend but the stops at both locations were only 10-15min which was not enough to fully enjoy both places. Every time the bus arrives, Flydalsjuvet becomes overfilled with people. I recommend walking from Geiranger village (approx. 1 hr hike each way) in your own time. We did hike back after our bus returned and that is when we took the best photos of this picturesque place. No rush, no people just us & nature!

if you're in the town, there are several ways to get to Flydalsjuvet including tourist bus, local bus, taxi or walking. The cheapest way would be the local bus, which has a limited schedule.
You can walk up - I don't recommend the road especially when there are cruise ships in town - there will be a lot of cars and buses and since the road is narrow, it can be quite dangerous. There are at least two hikes up - one starts near the Fjordsenter and ends up at Vesteras farm; from there, you can take the road down and continue on toward the Hotel Utsikten. This way is a 30-45 minute walk up, almost like walking stairs the whole time. This might be easier going up rather than down. The other way we found through the Vijnes campground and ends up at the Fossen campground. This is a little bit easier. I think there might be other little paths before and after to keep you off of the road.
In both cases, the paths are marked with a red "V" so you know that you're on the path .....
The views from the lookout point are fantastic ! The area is well organized with signboards filled with great information and toilets; railings and fences abound. Hopefully, you get good weather for a great view !!

Flydalsjuvet is the must-see attraction if you are visiting Geiranger. It provides fabulous view of the fjord and the town, and photos are amazing! From the town Flydalsjuvet can be reached by foot (takes about 1 hour), with a car or bike, which is much faster of course, or by taking one of local excursion buses (tickets can be bought in tourist office in town). Either way, warm clothes is recommended, as it can be a bit cold and windy here. But the view absolutely worth it!
