We booked a morning kayak tour with Geiranger Adventures and it was a fabulous way to experience the fjord, waterfalls, and stunning scenery up-close and personal. Highly recommend booking the first tour of the day if you want a smaller group experience - we were two of nine kayakers and were out on the water before those on the cruise ship had departed for the day.
Our guide, Tomas, was helpful in getting everyone comfortable with the gear and safety procedures and shared interesting stories along the way. He even offered to take everyone’s photos (without losing any phones in the water!)
If you’re comfortable with kayaking and looking to spend a few hours on the water, book with Geiranger Adventure.

My husband and I recently cruised Norway on Oceania's Nautica. We prefer to independently tour ports of call rather than take ship excursions. In preparation for this trip, my husband searched the Internet for active options in Geiranger. He came across a bike tour, called: "Sky toFjord Downhill Biking" offered by Geiranger Adventure. As road bike riders in Southern California, we thought this option was perfect for us. Geiranger Adventure was a great touring company. We contacted them by telephone from home to reserve the tour. Once we arrived at Geiranger, it was a short walk to their office located on the pedestrian street in Geiranger Harbor. We were fitted for helmets, gloves, safety vests and mountain bikes (with 27 gears and fenders) and, then, were driven by van up to Lake Djupvatnet and dropped off at the Djupvasshytta Hotel (1,030 meters above sea level) for the downhill bike ride. The van ride up the mountain took 22-minutes. After numerous picture stops, the downhill ride took us 1.5 hours. It was a blast! 18 km of a good asphalt, single lane road, with exciting hair pin curves and grades of 8-10 percent. The sights were spectacular. Although we shared the road with buses, campers and autos, the drivers were courteous and sparse in numbers. During our tour in early July, the weather was in the mid-60 degrees Fahrenheit. At the top, there were snow patches throughout the topography. Perfect bike riding weather. We highly recommend this tour. It was thrilling and memorable. We are so glad we took this wonderful downhill bike ride in this beautiful fjord countryside. We took a motor coach up the mountain, 1000 meters above the fjord and through 31 hairpin turns. We were on the tundra, above the tree line when we selected our bikes, tested our brakes and gears. Our group was lead by two very informative guides and followed by a safety car. This was a great adventure to do with teenage boys! The ride back down the mountain was thrilling! We stopped at strategic spots for pictures - one cannot just stop anywhere along the road since it is very narrow and you are sharing the road with tour motor coaches, cars & motor cycles.
Do the ride early in the day before the road is busy with traffic. A warm, wind-proof jacket is necessary. Safety vests, helmets and gloves were supplied with the bike.
Don't rush - take your time and enjoy the stunning views!

We booked a bus adventure through Cruising Excursions.com from Geiranger to the mountains. I asked the driver and he assured me that we would stop a number of times to take photos and would have 3 bathroom stops also. We went up the switchbacks through beautiful scenery up and up with no stops for photos. My camera doesent take good photos in a fast moving bus shooting through the windows. Every bit of the beautiful mountains just went wizzing by my window. The driver went out of his way to pick up four unknown girls stopping for them but not letting us out of the bus. After going up the mountains he stoped for 15 minutes to let out the same girls but none of the paid passengers were alloud to get out of the bus. After 3 hours of bus ride and most riders with full bladders we finally made the only stop for us and the driver clearly told us we had only 10 minutes and he would leave without us if we were late.. There was about 10 other busses there and we had one overlook and a small overcrouded gift shop with one set of bathrooms. Most went in the gift shop for the bathrooms and there were very long lines for rest rooms before we got there. Most of the passengers returned with no chance to reach the bathrooms. We then went back to Geiranger to finish this miserable excursion through beautiful scenery. On the way out of the bus I stopped to tell the driver exactly what I thought of him, but he didnt care. At home I reported to Cruising Excursions.com and they said they would do something about the driver...but who knows. On the scale from one to ten I give this excursion a minus five.

Our Agency Geiranger Adventure offers Bike and kayak tours but no bus tours. Your bus tour was probably arranged by another tour operator.

Geiranger was one of the ports I visited on a recent cruise on the Celebrity Infinity. Celebrity Cruises offered the Sky to Fjord Downhill Bike tour as one of their shore excursions. Having read the reviews and the description provided by Celebrity Cruises I booked the tour on the understanding that I would be allowed to ride the route at my own speed.
There was 37 riders from my ship on the tour, and some of them were not competent on a bike. I'd consider my competency level as only average, I am by no means a dedicated cyclist, but have done a bit of mountain biking in the past.
Unfortunately the tour was conducted as a convoy; with a guide at the front, a guide in the middle and a safety car following. The instructions were to ride single-file and no overtaking. Obviously this meant the pace was pretty slow.
Realistically the only way to have any fun was to break the rules; which inevitably led to other members of the group being upset. Definitely not an ideal situation when you're going to be stuck on a cruise ship with those people for many more days!
The scenery on the route is truly spectacular, and the road itself, with its many hairpins, is also pretty special. If I'd been allowed to ride at the speed I wanted then the tour would have definitely been 5 stars, unfortunately I wasn't.
I'm sorry that I've had to give my review a "poor" rating because it wasn't really the fault of Geiranger Adventure. I expect that the cruise ships are a significant source of income for them, and they were probably conducting the tour in the manner that Celebrity Cruises told them to. In other words, they were under strict instructions to not allow any of the cruise passengers to be injured!
My advice to anyone considering this activity is to book it direct with Geiranger Adventure, you'll save yourself some money and definitely have a much more enjoyable time.

Thank you for your review.
It is correct that we follow strict rules to avoid any danger and injuries for the passengers.
Usually our guides advise passengers to ride their bike in a single line to let traffic pass by but we also allow passengers to overtake slower riders if they check that the road is free and safe to do so. On very busy days with much traffic, many buses on the road, and big groups (i.e. 37 passengers) the guide may have considered worthwhile to restrict overtaking to avoid dangerous situations.
It is our goal that every passenger enjoys the bike ride, that means that every ore rides at his/her chosen speed to feel safe and have fun.

I recently went to Geiranger aboard ms Rotterdam and the option of Sky to Fjord appealed as an excursion. As we were to drop something like 1030 metres over 17 kilometres and the hair pin bends, most of the 27 participants were a little on edge.
The guides and back up crew were great. Safety was the first consideration, then enjoyment. We were told single file, but if the person ahead was too slow, you should overtake, but don't follow too closely. Each part was staged to take advantage of scenery viewing points. Five stops I think and the guide stood in the road to guide participants in.
There were some speedsters, some slower ones and many who had no difficulty overtaking. I overtook some, and was overtaken by others on every leg. It wasn't a race, or series of races as it was a buzz for your own enjoyment.
In my mid 60s I was among the oldest but never felt under threat at any stage. Not to say I didn't feel apprehensive at the start, I did! Safety first. The quality of bikes was good and state of repair too. The road surface didn't cause concern. Keep traffic rules but above all, enjoy! I thought it really was a thrill.

We took this SkyToFjord bike trip as an excursion from the trip. The ride down from the glacier-fed-lake has spectacular scenic views. This bike ride deserves 5 stars except for the two big cons listed below. If you bring warm clothing including hat and gloves, and don't mind being separated from other riders, then this is an excellent event.
Pros:
1. Spectacular scenic views.
Cons:
1. Trip leader rode too fast, so the various capabilities spread out the group over a large distance.
2. The trip leader didn't offer gloves for warmth of hands at the top of the mountain. Gloves were in a container at the bottom but weren't offered to participants.

Hired an ebike for 3 hours and it was an incredible experience. I am a cyclist but found the assisted power important for making it up the 6 km climb for spectacular views, Truly amazing experience. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Had a few problems hiring online ahead of time but there were plenty of bikes available if your unable to preorder

We booked independently and were driven up the mountain to 1000m. The driver gave a very helpful commentary on the way up, pointing out helpful detours, photo spots etc. to avoid the traffic. Once bikes were allocated to the 4 of us, we were advised about using gears and the brakes. We were provided with helmets, gloves and reflective jackets. The bikes were good quality and well maintained. Then we set off on our own, down the mountain. What an amazing experience -16 km of mostly down hill, hair-pin bends, with stunning scenery.
Couldn't fault Geiranger Adventure - thank you for a tremendous experience!

I booked this through our cruse line and the excursion was filled from our ship. I did it in early June so the spring melt was on, making all the streams and waterfalls in full flood. The scenery was truly spectacular which could be a bit of a problem if you are staring up at it as you arrive at a hairpin turn, but fortunately no one wiped out. We started beside a still frozen lake and coasted 17km back to Geiranger. Beautiful sunny day and several stops along the way for photo ops. I also had binoculars as I like to pick out details on the mountains as well as checking out the distant vistas. All necessary equipment is provided and our guide, Luka, was friendly and helpful. There was also a safety chase van following, which I needed as I threw the chain (entirely my own fault) just as we arrived back in town. This tour was a real highlight of the cruise and I would highly recommend it.

We are very interested in the bike tour but fear with it being late in the year the weather and road conditions will be unfavorable. We know to dress warmly etc. We are are going to be there October 1! Beth
