    Busy & Engaging
This is the centre of one of Puglia's "white towns". It's a large place from which radiate many roads and side-streets. The busiest one is the street leading uphill to the cathedral, lines with shops and cafes. The most obvious building is the impressive town hall, but there is plenty else to see around the square, including the statue of the saint atop a large column. Busy, a bit touristy, but a nice vibe.

    Lively lovely main square
This is the very central square in Ostuni White City. In the center is the obelisk monument to St. Oronzo, local saint accompanied with Town Hall and St. Francis of Assisi Church. The square is popular at night as a gathering place with numerous bars and restaurants around.

A nice old square with an obelisk
In the heart of the Old Town is located this nice old square with lots of famous buildings: eg.: Palazzo del Municipio. It’s a meeting point for, very popular with locals and tourists. There are some very good cafes, bars and restaurants. In the middle of the square a Baroque-style obelisk stands: the spire of Sant’Oronzo. It was made from limestone in the mid-700s and it is more than 20 metres high. Earlier (until 14th century) the name of the square was Piazza Sant'Oronzo.

There’s no better place in town to start your evening and enjoy the golden-hour than Ostuni’s Piazza della Libertà. An aperol spritz, some green olives, peanuts (with a spoon to serve yourself) and taralli. You can’t help but feel Italian.

This piazza has a special place in my heart because I lived near it for two years in the 1970s! I returned to visit in 2015 after having moved back to America 41 years earlier! Since the 2015 visit I have returned 3 more times because it is such a special town. These days it is a tourist destination, but Ostuni and the Piazza maintain their unique qualities and a much slower pace than the large cities and towns. I love relaxing in Piazza della Liberta where there are many coffee bars and restaurants there and near by. The obelisk with San Lorenzo D'Orosco standing at the very top, is still there, just like back in 1972 when I first saw him! And I expect he has been there for centuries before then. Right next to this piazza you find the entrance of the street that provides an easy walk uphill to Centro Storico, the most ancient part of the area. From there it is a truly majestic view of the Adriatic out beyond the olive orchards. Enjoy!

The tour guide said that this hilltop town of Ostuni is known as the White city. The central piazza is quite large and has a high statue of their patron saint Oronzo. The church dedicated to St Francis is in this piazza. A narrow street off the pizza leads to a retail area and the cathedral. It is a pleasant city however not uniquely different to other Italian cities so unless it is directly on your route I would not suggest that you detour to go there.

Nice traditional Italian piazza good place to stop for a snack of local cheeses and glass of wine before starting a walk into the old city. The old part of Ostuni is wonderfull a series of narrow streets and alleys full of ancient buildings with quaint little shops and restaurants. It has a different feel to other Italian hill towns I have visited possibly due to the fact that nearly all the buildings are painted white , very relaxing. A visit to Ostuni is a must for any visitor to Puglia. Local transport is good both train and bus will get you there.

If you stay in Ostuni - make sure you are wishing walking distance of the Piazza! It is the place to be in Ostuni. There are several restaurants/cafes there. The Cafe Centrale has wonderful fruit bowls in the morning. Cafe Ayroldi is the place to go for morning cappuccino and cornets and Garibaldi's is definitely the place for Apertivo, lunch and dinner

I stayed at a lovely studio with an amazing balcony view right above the Piazza Liberta ! Stunning! It was a bit of a noisy ,but that was the charm of that place. The Restorants served a good quality food. Prices were reasonable for the location - €20 for a lobster pasta ; €15 for a tuna tartar .. etc. The staff, though were a kind of nervous, I suggest they were very busy,so I forgived them, instead of not even opening the bottle of water I have ordered. They just placed the bottle on the table and left the rest of the service to my hands. I thing that the price list should include much of a kind attitude and certain kind of service. Anyway, I was on my vacation and didn't want to get stressed over that kind of stuff, but the tips I left responded to what I got as pattern of behavior.

Unlike small towns "homey" piazza - Ostuni's Piazza Liberta is rather large and expanded . Several streets kind of flow down into the piazza , creating various corners in which you can relax in a cafe and look down at the lower part of the town or visit the San Francesco church on the back side of the piazza , or you can had on and enter the old historic White City , just a few meters away .
There are many cafes and restaurants at and around the piazza . One of them where we had a couple of cappuccinos - is "White ostuni Tito Schipa"cafeand bistro on Corso Vittorio Emanuel II , 19/21 . (see seperate review) .
If you drive a car , headind to the historic White City, coming down from the "new" city via Corso Umberto I ,(one way) , please note : On the left side of the street , there are a dozen or so FREE parking spaces , right along the beautiful green park . Use it now , These may be the only free parking space in the area . From here - it's a 12 minutes stroll along Corso Cavour and oooops - you're at the Piazza !!!
As said before - 3 more minutes and your entering the historic White City . (see seperate review ) .

This is a great location for a coffee break and people watching. Shops line the square and it serves as the center of the town.

I could have sat in this Piazza all day for days on end. Lively and great people watching - especially with an aperol spritz.
