Compared to some of the great cathedrals in the Christian world, this building is quite modest, in both scale and decoration. The two side altars are more impressive than the central altar. Quite hard to get a good photo from outside as the building is positioned in what is now a quite small square at the top of the hill.

The cathedral damaged by the earthquake in 1456, Rebuilt between 1469-1495 in a Gothic style. The facade dominates the huge rose window from the 15th century. Interesting interior with interesting ceiling. Fortunately there are displays in English for the basic info and description. Open from 9:30m, free entrance, donation welcome.

We liked wandering in the narrow streets and the stairs in the Old Town. You need comfty shoes! The Duomo is perhaps on the highest point of the town. The Cathedrale di Santa Maria Assunta was built between 1437-1495. It’s an impressive building with beautiful rose windows on the fronts of the church. Inside my favourite parts were the ceiling and the baroque style altar (from about 1720). It’s made from stone with wooden altarpice. I think it’s worth a visit.

Charming cathedral with an impressive rose window. The interior is really helped by the presence of ample labelling in English courtesy of the Rotary organisation.

We spent 5 weeks in Puglia. As we had friends coming to stay we went into Ostuni many times, and my advice is to visit the old town which will take no more than an hour and perhaps another hour if you go to the Museum. Parking is a nightmare especially on weekends (Saturday market makes it impossible). The old town, up 1 narrow steep street is worth seeing, but the only time we paid an entrance fee to go into a church was here - 1E. There are much more charming towns to visit in the area. Highly recommended is a morning or afternoon in Martina Franca, a Baroque jewel. A visit on Sunday after church (around noon) in Locorotondo is well worth it for the lively atmosphere in its beautiful old town. Lecce deserves at least a half day. Cisternino, where we based ourselves has a tiny but charming centre and there is a good cafe and restaurant on the square. Remember that in Puglia the shops shut from around 12.30 to at least 4.00pm so you will find all the towns dead during this time - just a few restaurants open at lunch-time!!- all the activity happens morning and late afternoon into the night.

We loved the Duomo, and the walk through the old town up the hill to reach it. The view across the countryside to the sea is truly lovely. Once we were inside the Duomo, we were struck by the way it seemed to be a real part of the community's life and still maintain a very calm and peaceful atmosphere.
One of our family has CP and uses a stick to walk, and he managed the cobbles and marble surfaces well. High curbs were more of a challenge so watch out if you're unsteady on your feet!
Don't be put off by people labelling Ostuni as "touristy" - it is busy and there are a number of shops for tourists, but it's a shame to to dismiss a place just because its popular!

We visited the Duomo on a visit to Ostuni, "The White City". To be honest it is the only place in town worth a look. Very quiet and calming, the interior is nice, but not worth the admission charge. Once inside you look up to the rose window, which isn't there. It is just a part of the fascade.
Ostuni itself I found to be scruffy and uninspiring, most of the characteristic whitewash seems to be thrown at the buildings, with most ending up on the streets and stonework.
If you have to visit Ostuni, visit the Duomo, but be warned, like the rest of the town it is closes at 12.00.

The church was nice. You can see really nice view bit up the hill and to the right. You can see all the way to the sea from the hill side!

Worth walking to the centre of Ostuni to visit this Cathedral, or you can get a tuktuk up to the top. It is a beautiful building and should not be missed if visiting Ostuni.

This is at the top of a hill that’s a bit of a slog in the heat but it’s not too far and well worth the effort

I will be staying in Poligano a mare what is the best way to get to Ostuni as I wont have a car. is there a local bus directly to the town.
Written February 5, 2016
We didn't have a car for our stay in Bari, Puglia either. ... we traveled by train everywhere. ..there is a train from Polignano a Mare to Ostuni and then we took the local bus from the rail station into town. When we visited the olive oil farm, we took a taxi from the rail station to the farm. Hope this helps...Have a great trip!
