Day Tour of Ostuni, Martina Franca, Alberobello from Bari

3 reviews
Ostuni, Martina Franca, and Alberobello are three gems of Puglia’s Itria Valley, but visiting these towns in one day by bus or train is almost impossible. With this driving tour, skip the hassle and delays of public transportation and instead relax on board a private minivan to each town. Take in the famed “trulli” in Alberobello, sweeping views from Martina Franca, and the historic cathedral in Ostuni before the return drive.

We had a long hike through the countryside on a hot summer's day to get to this archaeological park. we were the only one's there and the staff were friendly and helpful. The history of the cave is interesting although it wasn't the most exciting historic site I experienced in Puglia.

If you're interested in seeing a genuine archeological dig in progress, you might consider visiting this site. Besides the remains of a 28,000 year old pregnant female, there is also a painting of the Virgin Mary from the time when this cave was used as a place of worship.

Located about 2 km from the white town on the former SS16 Ostuni-Fasano, since 1987 the site has been object of archeological exavations conducted by the palethnologist D.Coppola, with the collaboration of many scholars from Italian and foreign Universities and research centres. In 1991, within the cavity below the ridge of the hill, they were found the graves of Ostuni 1 and Ostuni 2, whose casts are on display in the museum and in the cave of Santa Maria di Agnano. The archeological site is still under investigation and has returned proofs of Neolitic, Iapigio-Messapian and Medieval ages. In the Modern age the same cave was used as a worship place of the Virgin Mary whose icon, still visible today, is painted on a wall inside the cavity. Next to the original cave you cans see a chapel of the same period.
