Must-see attraction. Bring enough water (1.5l per person, min.), some kind of hat and don't go up there in a flip-flop, please. In August, with that heavy sun and heat, I don't say it is an easy trip.

The volcano is easily accessible all to the top. Therefore, it is an excellent place to give smaller children, a view of a genuine volcano. You don't have to wear trekking boots if you have good trainers or trail running shoes.

Whoever comes to the island of Vulcano will try to climb up to the 'Gran Cratere' at about 400m asl. Still quite an effort, but nothing in comparison to the 'Scalata' on Stromboli. This tour is very popular,.so expect crowds. Once on top most people though go left to the fumaroles, while to the right one can go the highest spot of the crater rim, circling the whole crater and at the end still go past the fumaroles. What one is not supposed to do is to go down to the bottom of the crater, about 80m below the rim. Although one can see people in sandals, hiking boots are still recommended. At the start there is a shop, which rents out hiking boots and walking sticks. While on the crater there is no food or water available, so it is best to take some along.…
