Built in 1260 by the Venetian Duke of Naxos Marco Sanudo, the Frankish Castle is listed as one of the sights in the old town of Parikia. However if you’re expecting to see towering turrets and flying buttresses, you’ll be sorely disappointed.
There is almost nothing left of the castle. What you see here are part of a rounded tower and the remains of some of the walls as you walk past (it’s thought that most of the walls slid into the sea after a landslide in the 18th century).
You will need a big imagination to get any sense of a castle at all.
The most interesting think about it, is that it was made of an assortment of columns and blocks salvaged or taken from other ancient buildings.
Columns were laid on their side to help build the walls. As a result, the walls are a strange patterning of small square stones, long rectangular blocks and the rounded ends of columns, which look weirdly like sets of wheels.
You can’t go inside so it’s just a quick walk-past.
We passed it on our way up to the Church of Agios Konstantinos/Temple of Athena. It’s only 3 - 5 minutes walk from the port, it was not out of our way and the Kastro area lanes are very pretty to wander through.

If your lucky enough to stumble across this gem it’s nice to see, but don’t go out of your way to seek it out or you may be disappointed. It’s more of a quick pit stop as most of the castle is gone and lost to time. But considering how old it is, what’s left is still impressive.

It is a corner of a ruin in old town. The picture you see here is all you get to see. Spend your time walking around old town.

A castle made with the remains of an ancient temple-located in the centre of Paroikia - easily accessed on foot- worth visiting it

Don't expect "a castle", expect the city with narrow charming streets used to be part of a castle.
It is astonishing, walk there around, find tiny details (e.g. walls, which are part of homes now), and enjoy!

We found the castle with the help of very good signage. Not much to see there however. I wish there was more history explained on the sign. Worth the search.

It was interesting to know that mythological temples were disassembled to provide some of the stones for this Frankish castle built in 1260.

The castle itself isn't interesting but come here about half an hour before sunset for one of the best views in Parikia of the colors changing. There is a small walkway through Parikia town that will lead you to the vantage point directly facing the sea.

The best thing is that you have a lot of space to set up your tripod, GoPro, camera, DSLR, etc given that not a lot of people come here.

If you are unsure how to get here, ask Theo from Memories Jewellery how to get here. He was the one who directed us to this secret sunset spot!

Interesting example of use of spolia (repurposed millstones and other stones). This seems a common feature in several buildings on Paros, including the famous Ekatondapyliani church.
