I'll keep this simple. In January, we visited this not so well known wine country. It was off season but I was already in Berlin for business from the US. I had my lady join me as she is an avid lover of Rieslings. It was off season so most wineries were closed Fortunately I called in advance and several including Weingut Hey offered to open for us. The guys at Weingut Hey were amazing. They made a special effort to meet us and open up complete with a little fire. They were extremely friendly and provided incredible insight to their wines and the region.

They took us into their cellar and we spent well over an hour listening to their story and about the wines. They were even kind enough to share wines right out of the barrels. All of the wines were fantastic. My girlfriend who appreciates a good wine loved them all. I'm more of a scotch drinker but I found their wines very enjoyable as well. In fact, we ended up buying two cases to ship back to the States. Note- these wines are all consumed in the region. They aren't even available in Berlin so to enjoy them you need to go to the region and most likely the winery. The guys provided us shipping boxes and assisted in packing the wine. A point of insight though - they do not know how to ship to the states (actually we couldn't find anyone in the region that knew) - you will be on your own. We ultimately found a DHL location hidden inside a pet store in a little town on our way back to Berlin. It was not cheap but the only way to enjoy their wine again without another long trip.

In closing, the entire trip was a great experience and Weingut Hey was easily one of the highlights. I cannot emphasize enough that this is a stop you'll want to make.

The service, the seating area in the courtyard, the vegan options for lunch and also the wine was top, very tasty and inventive. We will come back and can only recommend the winery.

Wine tasting and a great menu - we can only recommend it. If you like, you can also learn a lot about wine production in Naumburg. Everything is very familiar and we would love to come back.

I visited the Hey winery on a Saturday in October 2023. The weather was beautiful, like late summer. The outdoor dining area was open and the tables were well occupied. Given the license plates of the cars parked in front of the winery, I assume that they were mainly guests from the region. As a Leipzig resident, I was already an out-of-town guest, even though the Saale-Unstrut district is very easy to reach from Leipzig.

My rating of the Hey winery is divided. If you are looking for a nice spot near Naumburg, want to eat a bite to eat, enjoy a glass of wine and unwind, the Hey winery is certainly a very good place to go. Five stars for this! The menu is small but fine. I chose a truffled tagliatelle. A very tasty dish! At €18.50 it's not exactly cheap, but dishes with truffles are generally not bargains. That's fine!

But: The Hey winery is not just a restaurant, but also and above all a winery! And not just any winery, but one that has the VDP grape eagle on its bottle cap, meaning it belongs to the illustrious circle of VDP wineries. And here there are some compromises to be made. The winery does not offer individual or group tastings, as is quite common at wineries (including in the Saale-Unstrut district). When I asked about a tasting, I was told that they did not have time for that. All of their strength was needed to serve the guests in the restaurant.

Afterwards I asked Alexander Hey. He confirmed in very friendly words that although tastings were not offered in principle, they would be happy to arrange a tasting if the restaurant was full and the reservation situation allowed it. Unfortunately, I had come at the wrong time. That's true: I was there when the weather was nice! My recommendation: If you are looking for a wine tasting, you should head to the Hey winery in bad weather (and it is best to call in advance).

Even without a wine tasting on site, as a wine lover, I did not miss the opportunity to take two bottles with me and drink them at home. A Riesling and a Pinot Gris, both Naumburger Sonneck, both vintage 2022, each for €25. The wines have their own style. They are certainly not mainstream wines. Unfortunately, they did not suit my taste. But that is not to say anything: I do not question the fact that they are still high-quality wines (VDP, after all).

I like to come back occasionally to unwind in a beautiful spot and with delicious food. But whether I really choose worse weather just to enjoy a wine tasting is up for debate.
